Question 1

Is the ALPA APO-Helvetar 48mm f/5.6 optically the same as the Schneider Super Angulon 47mm XL?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the ALPA Schneider APO-Helvetar 48mm is optically essentially identical to the Schneider Super Angulon f/5.6 47mm XL. The nominal difference in name comes from the true focal length of approximately 47.6mm, which ALPA rounds to 48mm. Both share the same optical design, so if you've used the Super Angulon 47 XL, the rendering will feel immediately familiar.

Question 2

Which medium format backs work best with the APO-Helvetar 48mm 5.6?

Accepted Answer

The lens performs strongly on backs up to around 33 megapixels, delivering sharp results to the corners. On higher-resolution backs its limits become more apparent compared to newer apochromatic designs like the Rodenstock 40HR. For most field and portrait work on current mid-range digital backs, it's a very capable choice.

Question 3

Does the ALPA APO-Helvetar 48mm f/5.6 cover 6x9 format?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the image circle is large enough to cover 6x9, which gives you meaningful room for camera movements without clipping. You can also stop down to f/16 or smaller in real-world shooting without significant diffraction issues, giving you good depth-of-field control across formats.

Question 4

How does the Copal 0 shutter affect how you use this lens?

Accepted Answer

The Copal 0 is a leaf shutter built directly into the lens, not the camera body. This means flash sync works at all shutter speeds — very useful in studio or bright outdoor conditions where you want to combine fill flash with a fast sync. It also means the camera body itself doesn't need a mechanical shutter, which is why ALPA 12 bodies are so compact and vibration-free.

Question 5

Is buying a used ALPA APO-Helvetar 48mm worth it?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — ALPA glass holds its optical quality well over time, and the Copal 0 shutter is a proven, serviceable mechanism. A pre-owned example in good condition gives you the same image quality as new. Every used lens on Camera-tweedehands.nl comes with a minimum 12 months warranty and is individually photographed so you can assess condition before buying.

Question 6

Does the ALPA APO-Helvetar 48mm f/5.6 have autofocus?

Accepted Answer

No — this is a fully manual lens, which is standard for the ALPA 12 system. ALPA bodies are precision manual-focus platforms designed for controlled shooting situations like landscape, architecture and studio work, where manual focus via a ground glass or live view is the norm. There's no electronic communication between lens and body.
