Question 1

What is the Atomos Shinobi used for?

Accepted Answer

The Atomos Shinobi is an on-camera monitor designed to give you a larger, higher-quality view of your camera's output than the built-in screen. It's primarily used for video production — helping with focus pulling, exposure checking, and framing — and accepts both 3G-SDI and 4K HDMI signals.

Question 2

Does the Atomos Shinobi record video?

Accepted Answer

No, the Shinobi is a monitor-only device — it does not record footage. If you need recording capability alongside monitoring, Atomos makes separate recorder-monitor units, but the Shinobi itself is purely a display.

Question 3

What cameras work with the Atomos Shinobi?

Accepted Answer

The Shinobi works with any camera that outputs via 4K HDMI or 3G-SDI. That covers a broad range of mirrorless cameras, DSLRs, and broadcast/cinema cameras. If your camera has an HDMI port and outputs a clean signal, the Shinobi will work with it.

Question 4

Is the Atomos Shinobi worth buying used?

Accepted Answer

For a monitor-only device like the Shinobi, buying used makes a lot of sense. On-camera monitors are passive display units with no mechanical wear components, so a well-kept second-hand unit typically shows very little degradation. A pre-owned Shinobi purchased here comes with a minimum 12 months warranty and is individually inspected before shipping. Check the product page or contact us to find out which power accessories are included.

Question 5

What is the difference between the SDI and HDMI inputs on the Shinobi?

Accepted Answer

The 3G-SDI input is used with professional broadcast cameras and supports locking connectors for secure on-set connections. The 4K HDMI input covers most consumer and prosumer mirrorless and cinema cameras. Having both on the same monitor means you can use the Shinobi across different camera systems without adapters.

Question 6

How big is the Atomos Shinobi screen?

Accepted Answer

The Shinobi has a 5-inch screen. That's noticeably larger than the rear screens on most mirrorless and DSLR cameras, making it meaningfully easier to judge critical focus and exposure — especially in bright outdoor conditions.
