Question 1

What does the Atomos Shinobi field monitor actually do?

Accepted Answer

The Atomos Shinobi is a 5-inch field monitor that connects to your camera via HDMI and displays the clean video signal on a larger screen. It's used on-set or on a rig to get a better view of focus, framing and exposure than a camera's built-in screen allows.

Question 2

Does the Atomos Shinobi record video?

Accepted Answer

No — the Shinobi is a monitor only, not a recorder. If you need recording capability, Atomos makes separate units like the Shogun series that combine monitoring and ProRes recording. The Shinobi is purpose-built for lightweight, affordable on-camera monitoring.

Question 3

Which cameras is the Atomos Shinobi compatible with?

Accepted Answer

Any camera with a full-size HDMI output can feed a signal to the Shinobi, including popular mirrorless bodies from Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and Nikon. As long as your camera outputs a clean HDMI signal, the Shinobi will display it — just check your camera's HDMI port type before buying a cable.

Question 4

Is the 5-inch screen big enough for professional use?

Accepted Answer

For on-camera or handheld rig use, 5 inches is a practical sweet spot — large enough to judge focus and exposure accurately, but compact enough not to overload a lightweight setup. If you need a larger display for a director or client, a 7-inch monitor would suit better.

Question 5

Is buying a used Atomos Shinobi worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes — field monitors like the Shinobi have no moving parts and are typically well cared for by video professionals. A used unit from Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're covered if anything is off.

Question 6

What accessories do I need to use the Atomos Shinobi?

Accepted Answer

You'll need a full-size HDMI cable to connect your camera, a compatible battery and a mounting solution — most shooters use a hotshoe adapter or a cheese plate on a camera rig. The used listing covers the monitor only, so check the variant page to confirm exactly what's included before ordering.
