What makes the Canon EOS 60D stand out?

The Canon EOS 60D replaced the 50D but made a deliberate shift: Canon swapped the magnesium-alloy body of the 50D for a polycarbonate shell with weather sealing, a fully articulating LCD, and a built-in pop-up flash โ€” changes that made the 60D genuinely more versatile for video work and run-and-gun shooting.

The articulating screen was a significant differentiator at launch. Competing bodies like the Canon 7D had better AF and a faster frame rate (8fps vs 5.3fps), but no swivel screen โ€” making the 60D the practical choice for video shooters who needed creative framing without external monitor rigs. The 1080p Full HD video with an external mic jack gave it real credibility for small productions.

Compared to the Canon 70D that followed it, the 60D lacks Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Wi-Fi, which matter if you shoot video or need wireless tethering. The Canon 80D pushed the sensor to 24 MP and refined the AF system. But for stills and controlled video work with manual focus, the 60D delivers clean, punchy images โ€” the 18.1 MP APS-C sensor produces a DXO color depth score of 22.2 bits and 11.5 stops of dynamic range, solid for landscape and portrait work.

Against mirrorless alternatives like the Sony Alpha 6400 or Canon EOS M50 Mark II, the 60D is bulkier and has less sophisticated AF. But it offers a huge selection of native Canon EF lenses at all price points.
