The Canon Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter PL-C 52 (WIII) is a drop-in CPL filter designed for Canon's drop-in filter mount adapters, letting you use polarizing filtration with large telephoto and super-telephoto lenses that don't accept front-mounted filters.
What makes a drop-in CPL different?
With a conventional CPL, you screw a filter onto the front of your lens — but many Canon super-telephoto and large-aperture lenses have no front filter thread, or their threads are too large to be practical. The drop-in slot sits inside the lens mount adapter, so you get full polarizing control without adding any front-element size or weight. You rotate the polarizer from the rear, which is especially handy when your lens hood is fixed or your tripod head makes front-element access awkward.
What does a circular polarizer actually do?
A CPL filter reduces reflections from water, glass, and foliage, deepens blue skies, and increases color saturation — effects that cannot be replicated in post-processing. The circular (as opposed to linear) design ensures your camera's autofocus and metering systems work correctly, since linear polarizers can interfere with beam-splitting metering systems used in modern DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.
