Question 1

What does the B50 bayonet mount mean on a Hasselblad filter?

Accepted Answer

B50 refers to the bayonet fitting size used on many classic Hasselblad medium format lenses. It's a quick-twist bayonet rather than a screw thread, so the filter locks on and off in seconds. B50 lenses are marked with 'B50' near the filter seat or on the front cap.

Question 2

What does the '2x' mean on a polarizing filter?

Accepted Answer

The 2x filter factor means the filter reduces the light reaching your film or sensor by approximately one stop (2x = 1 EV). You'll need to open up the aperture by one stop or slow down the shutter accordingly. Most cameras with through-the-lens metering compensate automatically, but with a Hasselblad 500-series and a handheld meter you'll want to account for it manually.

Question 3

Can a polarizing filter really not be replicated in editing software?

Accepted Answer

Correct — and this is the most important thing to understand before skipping one. Software can simulate sky darkening to a degree, but it cannot remove physical reflections from water, glass or wet surfaces after the fact. The polarizing effect only works at the moment of capture by physically blocking certain light wavelengths. For landscape and architecture work especially, there's no substitute.

Question 4

How do you use a rotating polarizing filter on a Hasselblad?

Accepted Answer

Mount the filter on your lens, then look through the viewfinder and slowly rotate the front element of the filter. You'll see reflections appear and disappear and sky contrast shift as you turn it. Set it to the position that gives you the effect you want, then shoot. The maximum polarizing effect is achieved when the sun is roughly 90 degrees to your shooting direction.

Question 5

Is buying a used Hasselblad B50 filter worth it?

Accepted Answer

For a precision optical accessory like a polarizing filter, used makes a lot of sense. The B50 mount is a straightforward mechanical bayonet with no electronics, and the optical glass either has scratches or it doesn't — which is exactly what our pre-purchase inspection checks for. Every pre-owned filter is individually graded and photographed, so you know the exact condition before it arrives. A second-hand filter that passes our inspection performs identically to a new one.

Question 6

Does the Hasselblad B50 polarizing filter work with digital Hasselblad backs?

Accepted Answer

Yes — if you're using a Hasselblad 500-series body with a digital back (such as a CFV back), the lens mount and filter mount are unchanged from the film era. Your B50 lenses and B50 filters work exactly as they did on film. The polarizing effect is equally valuable for digital capture, particularly for glare control and sky rendering in landscape or product photography.
