The Hoya R72 Infrared Filter is a 49mm screw-in filter that blocks visible light below approximately 720nm, passing only infrared wavelengths to create the signature high-contrast, dream-like look that infrared photography
What does the R72 filter do?
The R72 designation refers to the 720nm cutoff point β light below that wavelength is blocked, while infrared light passes through to your sensor. The result is white foliage, dark skies, and an ethereal atmosphere that's impossible to replicate in post-processing alone. It works with any camera that has infrared sensitivity (most unmodified digital cameras do, to varying degrees), and the 49mm thread fits a wide range of compact and mirrorless lenses.
Who is this filter for?
If you shoot landscapes, architecture, or fine-art photography and want to experiment with infrared without committing to a full sensor conversion, a used R72 filter is the low-cost entry point. It pairs well with lenses commonly found in the 49mm thread size β many standard kit and prime lenses for mirrorless systems use this diameter. Buying used
A second-hand Hoya R72 makes a lot of sense β filters don't have moving parts, wear is usually cosmetic, and every item comes with a minimum 12 months warranty. Each pre-owned filter is individually inspected before listing.
