Question 1

What magnification range does the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro cover?

Accepted Answer

The Laowa 25mm f/2.8 covers 2.5x to 5x life-size magnification. That means at maximum magnification a 1mm subject fills roughly 5mm on your sensor — far beyond the 1:1 (1x) limit of most dedicated macro lenses. You adjust magnification by rotating the focus ring, which physically changes the extension of the lens barrel.

Question 2

Does the Laowa 25mm 2.5-5X have autofocus on Canon RF cameras?

Accepted Answer

No — the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X is a fully manual lens with no autofocus and no electronic aperture coupling to the camera body. You set focus and aperture entirely by hand. At magnifications above 2x, depth of field is so razor-thin that manual focus via a focus rail is actually more precise than any autofocus system would be anyway.

Question 3

Is the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro good for insect and nature photography?

Accepted Answer

It's excellent for static or slow-moving subjects in controlled conditions — think insects resting, flowers, fungi, or macro studio work. Because there's no image stabilisation and working distances at 5x are extremely short (often just a few millimetres from the front element), live insects in the field require patience and a stable setup. A tripod or focusing rail is strongly recommended.

Question 4

What aperture should I use with the Laowa 25mm 2.5-5x?

Accepted Answer

At extreme magnifications, diffraction becomes noticeable at very small apertures like f/22 or f/32. Many where there's enough depth of field to keep the subject sharp without diffraction softening the image. At f/2.8 the depth of field is extremely shallow — useful for subject isolation but challenging to nail focus.

Question 5

How does the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 compare to the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM?

Accepted Answer

These lenses serve different purposes. The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM reaches 1.4x magnification maximum and includes built-in optical image stabilisation and autofocus — it's a versatile macro you can hand-hold and use for portraits too. The Laowa 25mm tops out at 5x magnification with no AF or IS, making it a pure specialist for extreme close-up work. If you need magnifications above 2x, the Laowa goes where the Canon simply can't.

Question 6

Does the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X work on Canon RF cameras like the EOS R5 or EOS R6?

Accepted Answer

Yes — this version is built specifically for the Canon RF mount, so it attaches directly to any Canon RF-mount mirrorless body, including the EOS R, RP, R5, R6, R7, and R10. Because the lens has no electronic contacts, in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) won't be activated automatically, but the physical mount connection is fully compatible.

Question 7

Is buying a used Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro worth it?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — this lens has no autofocus motor, no image stabilisation mechanics, and no complex electronic components to wear out. The main things to check on a second-hand copy are optical cleanliness (dust, fungus, scratches) and smooth focus ring action, both of which are part of the inspection process. Every used Laowa lens on Camera-tweedehands.nl comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're covered after purchase.

Question 8

What's the difference between the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 and the Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO?

Accepted Answer

The Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO tops out at 2x magnification but gives you a much longer working distance from lens to subject, which is useful for live insects or subjects you don't want to disturb. The 25mm 2.5-5X goes further in magnification (up to 5x) but the working distance shrinks dramatically at higher magnifications. The 65mm also carries an APO designation, meaning it's designed to minimise chromatic aberration across the frame. Choose the 65mm for field macro; choose the 25mm when you need extreme magnification in studio-style conditions.
