Question 1

Does the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO have autofocus on Canon RF?

Accepted Answer

No — this lens is fully manual focus on every mount including Canon RF. There is no electronic autofocus linkage at all. In practice, most serious macro photographers prefer manual focus anyway because precise subject framing at 2x magnification requires fine, deliberate control that AF systems often struggle with. Using a focus rail is a popular technique with this lens for focus stacking.

Question 2

What does '2x Ultra Macro' actually mean for Canon RF shooters?

Accepted Answer

It means the lens projects the subject onto the sensor at twice life-size (2:1 magnification ratio). A standard macro lens tops out at 1:1 (life-size). With the Laowa 90mm at full magnification, a 1cm insect fills 2cm of your sensor — revealing detail that most macro lenses simply can't capture. For APS-C or full-frame Canon RF bodies, this translates into extraordinary close-up resolution.

Question 3

What is the difference between the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO and a 100mm macro like the Canon RF 100mm F2.8L Macro IS?

Accepted Answer

The biggest functional differences are magnification and price bracket. The Laowa reaches 2:1 (twice life-size) while the Canon RF 100mm F2.8L Macro IS maxes out at 1.4:1. The Canon offers autofocus, optical image stabilisation, and an L-series weather seal — the Laowa is all-manual with no IS. For studio or controlled macro work where autofocus isn't needed, the Laowa's 2x magnification is a genuine advantage. The Canon wins for handheld versatility and everyday use.

Question 4

Is the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO good for portraits?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the 90mm focal length is a classic short-telephoto portrait range, and the f/2.8 aperture produces a soft, creamy background separation at normal portrait distances. The APO optical design controls chromatic aberration well, which keeps skin tones and fine hair detail clean. You'll be working in manual focus, so it suits photographers comfortable with zone focusing or live-view magnification for still portrait sessions.

Question 5

Can I use the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO for wedding photography?

Accepted Answer

It works well for specific wedding shots — rings, floral details, table decorations, fine embroidery on a dress — where you have time to set up and focus manually. It's less suited to fast-moving candid moments because of the manual focus requirement. Many wedding photographers carry it as a dedicated detail lens alongside a faster autofocus prime for portraits and ceremony coverage.

Question 6

Does the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 APO work with Canon RF crop-sensor (APS-C) bodies?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the Canon RF mount is shared across Canon's full-frame and APS-C mirrorless lineup. The lens covers a full-frame image circle, so it works on APS-C bodies with no vignetting. On an APS-C Canon body, the 90mm focal length gives you a field of view equivalent to roughly 144mm, which increases working distance from your subject at the same magnification — useful for skittish subjects.

Question 7

Is it worth buying a used Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — the all-metal construction and absence of complex AF motors mean used copies age very well. Wear is typically cosmetic. Buying second-hand gives you access to a high-performing APO macro lens at a significantly lower outlay than new, and on Camera-tweedehands.nl every lens comes professionally inspected with a minimum 12 months warranty, so the risk is minimal. It's one of those lenses that's particularly good value pre-owned.

Question 8

How does the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Canon RF compare to the Sony FE or Nikon Z version?

Accepted Answer

The optical formula is identical across all mount versions — the Canon RF, Sony FE (Sony E-mount), and Nikon Z variants share the same apochromatic glass and 2:1 magnification capability. The difference is purely the physical mount. If you shoot Canon RF mirrorless bodies, the native Canon RF version is the one to get — no adapter needed, and the fit is direct and secure.
