Question 1

What does 'CF APO' mean on the Laowa Argus 33mm?

Accepted Answer

'CF' stands for Crop Factor — confirming the lens is designed and optimised specifically for APS-C sensors, not full-frame. 'APO' stands for apochromatic, meaning the optical design corrects chromatic aberration across multiple wavelengths of light. In practice, you get cleaner colour fringing control even when shooting wide open at f/0.95, which is something many ultra-fast lenses struggle with.

Question 2

Does the Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 have autofocus?

Accepted Answer

No — this is a fully manual focus lens with no electronic contacts. There's no autofocus and no optical image stabilisation. On most Fujifilm bodies you can still use focus peaking and magnification via the EVF or LCD to nail focus accurately, but if AF is a must for your shooting style, this lens isn't the right fit.

Question 3

What is the equivalent focal length on a Fujifilm APS-C body?

Accepted Answer

On any Fujifilm X-mount body with an APS-C sensor, the 33mm focal length gives a field of view equivalent to approximately 50mm on a full-frame camera. That's considered a 'standard' or 'normal' angle of view — close to what the human eye sees — making it versatile for portraits, street, and travel photography.

Question 4

How does the Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 compare to the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R?

Accepted Answer

The main headline difference is aperture: f/0.95 vs f/1.4 is a substantial gap in light-gathering ability and depth-of-field control. The Laowa also adds an APO optical formula for better chromatic aberration control. The trade-off is that the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R has autofocus, which makes it far more practical for fast-moving subjects. The Laowa is the choice if maximum subject separation and low-light capability matter more than AF speed.

Question 5

Is the Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

Yes — an f/0.95 aperture lets in dramatically more light than a typical f/1.8 or f/2 lens, which shortens exposure times and reduces star trailing at night. The APO design also helps control coma and chromatic aberration around bright point sources like stars. The 33mm focal length is wide enough to capture good swaths of sky, and at 0.95 you can keep ISO relatively low for cleaner images.

Question 6

What filter size does the Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 take?

Accepted Answer

The filter thread is 62mm. That's a fairly common size, so ND filters, polarisers, and UV filters are widely available and generally affordable in that diameter.

Question 7

Is buying a used Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 worth it?

Accepted Answer

Buying this lens second-hand makes strong sense — it's a fully manual, all-mechanical lens with no electronics to fail, no AF motor to wear out, and no stabilisation system to develop faults. The main thing to check on a pre-owned copy is the glass (for scratches or fungus) and the focus ring action (should feel smooth and damped). Every used lens sold through Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty.

Question 8

How heavy is the Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 CF APO, and is it well-balanced on a Fujifilm body?

Accepted Answer

The lens weighs 590 g, which is notably heavy for an APS-C prime. On compact Fujifilm bodies like the X-T series or X-S series it does feel front-heavy, so a body with a good grip helps. Many photographers add an L-plate or battery grip for a more balanced hold during longer sessions. For studio or slow street work this isn't really an issue, but it's worth knowing if you plan to shoot handheld all day.
