Question 1

What mounts is the Leica 100-400mm f/5-6.3 Vario-Elmar-SL compatible with?

Accepted Answer

The Leica 100-400mm f/5-6.3 Vario-Elmar-SL uses the Leica SL mount. Current Leica SL-system bodies (SL2, SL2-S) use the L-mount bayonet, which is also shared with Panasonic S-series and Sigma fp cameras through the L-mount Alliance. However, full autofocus and electronic communication behaviour on non-Leica bodies has not been officially confirmed for this lens, so native Leica SL-system bodies are the safest and recommended pairing for guaranteed full functionality.

Question 2

Is the Leica Vario-Elmar-SL 100-400mm good for wildlife photography?

Accepted Answer

Yes — a 100–400mm zoom is one of the most practical focal length ranges for wildlife. At 400mm you have enough reach to fill the frame with birds, mammals or distant subjects without needing to get uncomfortably close. The variable aperture (f/5–6.3) is typical for lenses in this class and works well in good light or with the high-ISO capability of modern mirrorless bodies.

Question 3

What is the difference between f/5 and f/6.3 on this lens?

Accepted Answer

This lens has a variable maximum aperture: at 100mm the widest opening is f/5, and as you zoom toward 400mm it narrows to f/6.3. That's roughly two-thirds of a stop difference. In practice it means you may need to raise ISO slightly when shooting at the long end in lower light — something to keep in mind for indoor sports or dusk wildlife sessions.

Question 4

How does the 100-400mm focal range compare to a fixed 400mm prime?

Accepted Answer

A zoom like this gives you far more compositional flexibility than a fixed prime. You can frame tight at 400mm or pull back to 100mm for context shots without swapping glass. A dedicated 400mm prime would typically offer a wider maximum aperture and potentially slightly sharper output wide open, but the zoom's versatility makes it a more practical all-in-one solution for most wildlife and sports photographers.

Question 5

Is buying a used Leica 100-400mm f/5-6.3 Vario-Elmar-SL worth it?

Accepted Answer

Leica glass holds its build quality exceptionally well, which makes second-hand purchases a genuinely good option. A pre-owned Vario-Elmar-SL that has been professionally inspected lets you access Leica's optical quality at a more accessible price point. On Camera-tweedehands.nl every used lens comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're covered if anything unexpected comes up after purchase.

Question 6

What should I check when buying a used 100-400mm telephoto zoom?

Accepted Answer

Focus on four things: zoom smoothness (it should rotate evenly without stiff spots), front and rear element condition (look for scratches or fungus), autofocus speed on your specific body, and the condition of the lens barrel (check for dents that might affect the mount seal). Buying from a platform that individually photographs and inspects each item, and offers a warranty, removes most of that guesswork.

Question 7

Can I use the Leica 100-400mm 5-6.3 for sports photography?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. The 100–400mm zoom range is a classic choice for sports — think athletics tracks, football pitches and motorsport circuits where you need reach but also want flexibility to reframe quickly. The key variable is your camera body's autofocus performance; the SL system's AF is well suited to tracking moving subjects. In bright outdoor conditions, the f/5–6.3 aperture is perfectly workable.

Question 8

What is the model number 11191 for the Leica Vario-Elmar-SL?

Accepted Answer

11191 is the official Leica product reference number for the 100-400mm f/5-6.3 Vario-Elmar-SL. Leica uses these six-digit codes to uniquely identify each product in their lineup. When buying used, checking that the box, manual and invoice all carry the same 11191 reference is a simple way to confirm you have the correct version of the lens.
