Question 1

What is the difference between the Leica 35mm Summilux-M 11727 and the 11663?

Accepted Answer

The 11663 is the previous FLE (Floating Lens Element) version of the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. The 11727 is the updated version, featuring a revised casing design, a shorter minimum focus distance of 0.4m (closer than the 11663), and an upgraded 11-blade aperture diaphragm — up from 9 blades on the earlier version — which produces noticeably rounder and smoother bokeh.

Question 2

Is the Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH 11727 good for street photography?

Accepted Answer

Yes — 35mm is arguably the definitive street focal length on a rangefinder, and the compact 338g body of the 11727 means it doesn't unbalance an M camera or draw attention. Manual focus is part of the rangefinder street-shooting tradition, and the lens's focus tab makes zone focusing quick and intuitive. The f/1.4 aperture handles mixed indoor/outdoor light without flash.

Question 3

Does the Leica Summilux-M 35mm 1.4 perform well wide open?

Accepted Answer

At f/1.4 the center is sharp but performance toward the edges is softer — this is typical of fast 35mm lenses and is part of the character many Leica shooters actually prefer. Stopping down to f/2 brings a noticeable contrast boost across the frame. For critical edge-to-edge sharpness, f/4 and beyond is where this lens is at its most clinical.

Question 4

What cameras is the Leica 11727 compatible with?

Accepted Answer

The 11727 uses the Leica M bayonet mount, so it works natively on all Leica M-mount bodies — including the M10, M11, M-A, and M-E series. It can also be adapted to other mirrorless systems using M-mount adapters, though you lose rangefinder coupling and need to rely on live view or focus peaking.

Question 5

Is buying a used Leica 35mm Summilux-M ASPH worth it?

Accepted Answer

Leica glass is built to last decades, and a pre-owned Summilux-M typically shows little optical degradation even with regular use. Buying used means you get the same optical performance for less, and on Camera-tweedehands.nl every used item comes with a minimum 12 months warranty and has been professionally inspected. It's one of the most cost-effective ways to get into Leica M glass without paying new prices.

Question 6

Does the Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH have image stabilisation or autofocus?

Accepted Answer

No — the 11727 is a fully manual focus lens with no optical image stabilisation. This is by design: Leica M is a rangefinder system built around manual, deliberate shooting. If you need AF or IS in a 35mm, this lens family isn't aimed at you. The upside is a simpler, more durable optical construction with no electronics to fail over time.

Question 7

What filter size does the Leica 35mm Summilux-M 11727 use?

Accepted Answer

The 11727 takes 46mm filters. That's a relatively small thread size, which keeps filter costs down and protector filters light. A lens hood is included in the box, so you have immediate flare protection without buying anything extra.

Question 8

How does the Leica Summilux-M 35mm 1.4 compare to the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.4?

Accepted Answer

The Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.4 is the most direct budget alternative on the M mount — it's significantly cheaper and optically competent. The Summilux-M 11727 pulls ahead in bokeh smoothness thanks to its 11-blade aperture, build consistency, and close-focus capability at 0.4m. For photographers who plan to use the lens for years and want Leica's optical refinement and resale value, the Summilux is the stronger long-term choice.
