Question 1

What is the difference between the Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH (11892) and the newer version?

Accepted Answer

The 11892 silver chrome uses a floating element design that maintains sharpness across focus distances and has a minimum focus distance of 0.7m. A later version of the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH was released with a closer minimum focus distance of 0.45m. The 11892 remains highly regarded for its rendering character — centre sharpness at f/1.4 is exceptional, and many shooters prefer its bokeh signature. If 0.7m MFD works for your shooting style, the used 11892 is a compelling choice.

Question 2

What filter size does the Leica Summilux 50mm 1.4 ASPH use?

Accepted Answer

The Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH (11892) uses a 46mm filter thread. That's a relatively small diameter for an f/1.4 lens, which makes quality filters — polarisers, ND, UV — affordable and easy to find.

Question 3

How close can the Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH focus?

Accepted Answer

The minimum focus distance is 0.7m. For a 50mm rangefinder lens that's quite usable for tight portrait framing or close environmental street shots. If you need to go closer, dedicated close-focus adapters exist for the M mount, though those are third-party solutions.

Question 4

Is the Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH sharp at f/1.4?

Accepted Answer

Yes — centre sharpness at f/1.4 is a well-documented strength of this lens. In the central portion of the frame the rendering is considered excellent even wide open, with strong contrast and good control of chromatic aberration. Edges improve noticeably as you stop down toward f/2.8–f/4, which is typical for a fast prime of this design.

Question 5

Does the Leica Summilux 50mm f/1.4 ASPH work on digital and film Leica M bodies?

Accepted Answer

Yes — on both. The Leica M mount is mechanically consistent across digital bodies (M10, M11) and classic film cameras (M6, M7, MP), so the 11892 mounts directly on all of them without any adapter. It's a fully manual lens — you set focus via the rangefinder patch and control aperture on the lens ring, which is exactly how M-system shooting is designed to work.

Question 6

What are the best affordable alternatives to the Leica Summilux 50mm f/1.4 ASPH?

Accepted Answer

The Voigtländer 50mm f/1.5 Nokton Aspherical is the most commonly recommended alternative — it shares the M mount, offers similar low-light capability, and has a modern aspherical design. The Voigtländer Nokton Classic 50mm f/1.5 is another option with a more vintage rendering style. Neither replicates the exact character of the Summilux, but they're practical M-mount choices if budget is the priority.

Question 7

Is buying a used Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH worth it?

Accepted Answer

For most buyers, yes. Leica glass holds its build quality extremely well — the all-metal construction of the Summilux-M means a well-kept second-hand copy performs identically to a new one. Buying used lets you access one of the most capable 50mm lenses for M-mount at a more accessible entry point. At Camera-tweedehands.nl every pre-owned lens is individually inspected, graded by condition, and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're not taking a blind gamble.

Question 8

How many aperture blades does the Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH have?

Accepted Answer

It has 9 aperture blades. A 9-blade design produces a near-circular aperture opening even at mid-range f-stops, which translates to smooth, rounded bokeh highlights — a key reason portrait and street photographers favour this lens for selective-focus work.
