Question 1

Is the Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35mm compatible with the Leica SL3?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH uses the Leica L-mount, which is shared across all SL-series bodies including the SL, SL2, and SL3. You get full autofocus and electronic communication on all of them.

Question 2

Is the 16-35mm focal range good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

The 16mm end is well-suited for astro work — a wider focal length means you can use longer exposures before stars trail (following the 500 rule or NPF rule). The f/3.5 maximum aperture at 16mm is a reasonable light-gatherer for Milky Way shots, though a faster prime will always edge it out in pure light collection. The trade-off is the flexibility of a zoom when composing wide-field night scenes.

Question 3

How does this lens compare to the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH?

Accepted Answer

These two lenses serve complementary roles in the SL system. The 16-35mm is your go-to when you need to go genuinely wide — great for landscapes, architecture, and astro. The Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH covers a much broader range and starts with a brighter f/2.8 aperture at the wide end, making it the more versatile all-rounder. Many SL shooters pair both.

Question 4

What is the difference between the Leica 11177 and 11176?

Accepted Answer

The MPN 11177 refers to the Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH. The 11176 is a separate product in the Leica SL lens lineup. If you're searching specifically for the 16-35mm ultra-wide zoom, 11177 is the correct part number to look for.

Question 5

How is the autofocus performance on the Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35mm?

Accepted Answer

The lens uses a quick, quiet AF motor that locks on reliably — useful when you're shooting landscapes and need to recompose fast as light changes, or when capturing architecture with precise focus placement. It's not a sports-action lens by design, but the AF is confident and smooth for the use cases it's built around.

Question 6

Is buying a used Leica SL lens a good idea?

Accepted Answer

Leica builds its SL lenses to professional standards, so they tend to age well and hold up to heavy use. At Camera-tweedehands.nl, every pre-owned Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35mm is hand-inspected individually before sale, documented with condition photos, and carries a minimum 12 months warranty — so you get professional-grade assurance without paying new-glass prices. The condition grade on the listing details the exact state of your lens.

Question 7

Does the 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 work on L-mount cameras from other brands like Panasonic or Sigma?

Accepted Answer

The Leica L-mount is an open standard shared with Panasonic and Sigma, so the Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH will physically mount on bodies like the Panasonic S5 II or Sigma fp. Autofocus and electronic functions should work, though Leica optimises its SL lenses primarily for its own SL-series bodies.

Question 8

How wide is 16mm on a full-frame camera for landscape photography?

Accepted Answer

On a full-frame sensor, 16mm gives you a roughly 107-degree diagonal field of view — wide enough to capture sweeping mountain vistas, dramatic foregrounds, or the full arc of a night sky. It's noticeably wider than a 24mm starting point, which is why this lens is a strong choice over the Leica 24-70mm range when landscape or astro work is your priority.
