The Nikon D60 in Context

The Nikon D60 carries forward the compact, lightweight body philosophy of the Nikon D40 and D40x, adding an integrated dust reduction system with airflow control โ€” a practical upgrade when swapping Nikon F lenses in the field.

Compared to the D40x, the D60 has essentially the same core specs but adds dust reduction. Step up to the Nikon D3000 or Nikon D3100 and you get 11 autofocus points instead of 3, plus more megapixels โ€” meaningful upgrades if you shoot moving subjects often. The Nikon D5000 adds a flip-out screen and live view, which the D60 lacks. If you need a reliable, lightweight body to learn exposure and composition fundamentals on a Nikon F mount, the D60 is a solid choice.

The CCD sensor delivers a DXO color depth score of 22.5 bits and a dynamic range of 11.4 EV โ€” solid figures for a camera of this class. Low-light performance is honest: ISO 800 produces good results, ISO 1600 is still competitive, and the extended ISO 3200 shows a noticeable jump in noise. The DXO low-light ISO score is 562, which reflects that reality accurately.

One thing worth knowing: the D60 does not have a built-in AF motor. That means autofocus only works with AF-S or AF-I lenses that carry their own focus motor. Older screw-drive AF Nikkor lenses can be mounted but will only operate in manual focus mode. That's not a dealbreaker โ€” the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G works well on it, and there is a wide range of compatible AF-S glass available.
