What makes the Nikon D70 special?

The Nikon D70 arrived as Nikon's first truly affordable consumer DSLR, and it immediately disrupted the market. Where the earlier Nikon D100 was pricier and slower to respond, the D70 offered snappier performance, a shorter shutter lag, and a higher shutter speed ceiling of 1/8000 s โ€” features previously found only on pro bodies.

The CCD sensor is the defining characteristic here. CCD sensors produce a different tonal quality compared to the CMOS sensors found in every modern Nikon body โ€” colours tend to be vivid and film-like straight out of camera, which is exactly why the D70 has developed a cult following among photographers who miss that look. The large 7.85 ยตm pixel pitch means individual pixels capture a lot of light, which keeps images clean at the camera's native ISO 200 base.

Compared to its direct successor the Nikon D70s, the D70 is functionally near-identical โ€” the D70s added a slightly larger LCD and a USB cable remote shutter release socket, but the sensor, AF system, and image quality are essentially the same. Step up to the Nikon D200 and you get 10 MP, a 11-point AF system, and magnesium-alloy weather sealing, but at a significantly heavier body weight. If you want to stay in the Nikon F ecosystem with a much more capable modern sensor, the Nikon D7200 offers 24 MP, 51 AF points, and dual card slots โ€” a genuine leap in technical performance for not much more on the used market.

The D70's 5-point AF system is modest by any modern standard, but it locks on quickly in decent light, which is why sports and event shooters of its era found it reliable. The 95% viewfinder coverage is a nice touch โ€” most entry-level cameras of that generation did not offer such coverage.
