What makes the Nikon Df special?
The Df combines the 16.2MP full-frame sensor derived from the Nikon D4 with a retro-styled, all-metal body and a set of dedicated physical dials for shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation, and drive mode. There's no video mode โ a deliberate choice that prioritises the still-photography experience above everything else.
Compared to the Nikon D750, the Df trades resolution and video capability for a unique lens compatibility story. Against the Nikon D850, the gap in resolution is significant โ 45 MP vs 16.2 MP โ but the Df's larger pixel pitch (7.29 ยตm) delivers excellent per-pixel light gathering, reflected in its DXO low-light ISO score of 3,279 and dynamic range of 13.1 stops.
The most distinctive feature is the flip-up AI aperture coupling lever, borrowed from classic film bodies. This means the Df is one of the very few modern DSLRs that can meter correctly with pre-AI Nikkor lenses โ older lenses that cannot be mounted on standard modern Nikon DSLRs without modification. If you have a collection of vintage glass, this is a genuinely useful capability.
The Nikon Zf is the natural spiritual successor in mirrorless form โ it shares the retro aesthetic and physical dials, but moves to the Z mount with a 24.5 MP sensor. If you're already invested in the F-mount ecosystem or own pre-AI lenses, a used Df remains a compelling choice.
