Question 1

Is the Nikon F6 a professional camera?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the Nikon F6 is a professional-grade 35mm SLR and the last camera in Nikon's F-series, a lineage that defined pro film photography for decades. It offers 100% viewfinder coverage, a 1/8000s top shutter speed, advanced metering, and a build quality designed for demanding, all-conditions shooting.

Question 2

How does the Nikon F6 compare to the Nikon F5?

Accepted Answer

The F6 replaced the F5 and is lighter and more compact while matching or exceeding its predecessor in every meaningful spec. The F6 also adds full Nikon Creative Lighting System support — something the F5 lacks.

Question 3

Is the Nikon F6 still in production?

Accepted Answer

No — Nikon has discontinued the F6, making it the last professional film camera Nikon produced. No replacement has been announced, which makes well-maintained used examples increasingly sought after by serious film shooters.

Question 4

How does the Nikon F6 compare to the Canon EOS-1V?

Accepted Answer

Both cameras are considered the pinnacle of 35mm SLR technology and sit alongside the Leica R9 as the top professional film cameras of the modern era. The F6 has a clear edge for Nikon shooters because of its full CLS flash system compatibility and native Nikon F-mount lens ecosystem. Both are robust, multipurpose instruments built for professional use.

Question 5

What lenses work best with the Nikon F6?

Accepted Answer

The F6 uses the Nikon F-mount and is compatible with virtually all F-mount lenses from AI through AF-S. Popular modern choices include the NIKKOR AF-S 35mm f/1.8G and NIKKOR AF-S 50mm f/1.8G. Classic AI-S primes like the Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/2 AI are also highly regarded. Wide-angle options like the Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 and 17-35mm f/2.8 perform particularly well on 35mm film.

Question 6

Does the Nikon F6 support modern Nikon Speedlights?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the F6 is the only film camera ever to fully support Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS), including all functions of the Nikon SB-800 and SB-600 Speedlights. This gives you the same sophisticated multi-flash and off-camera flash control that Nikon's pro digital bodies offer, which is unique among film cameras.

Question 7

Is buying a used Nikon F6 worth it?

Accepted Answer

A second-hand Nikon F6 is an excellent buy if you want the best 35mm SLR experience available. The camera is built to professional durability standards and typically holds up well over time. Key things to verify when buying used: shutter accuracy up to 1/8000s, film door light seals, viewfinder clarity, and F-mount contact condition. Buying from a platform that inspects and warranties each item reduces the risk significantly.

Question 8

How does the Nikon F6 compare to the Nikon F100?

Accepted Answer

The F100 is a semi-professional body and a solid, more budget-friendly film camera. The F6 steps above it with 100% viewfinder coverage (the F100 offers 96%), a more robust weather-sealed design, and full CLS flash support. The F6 is built to handle more demanding professional work.
