Question 1

Is the OM System 8mm f/1.8 Fisheye Pro good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it's one of the most capable fisheye lenses for night sky work. The f/1.8 maximum aperture lets you use shorter exposures than most fisheyes, which helps reduce star trailing. The 0.12m minimum focus distance also means you can include foreground subjects close to the lens while still capturing a wide sweep of sky above — a useful trick for Milky Way compositions.

Question 2

What is the full-frame equivalent focal length of this lens?

Accepted Answer

On a Micro Four Thirds sensor with its 2x crop factor, the 8mm focal length gives a field of view equivalent to 16mm on a full-frame camera. That's an extremely wide, immersive fisheye perspective — noticeably wider and more dramatic than typical ultra-wide rectilinear lenses.

Question 3

Can you use the OM System 8mm fisheye for creative non-fisheye shots?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. If you compose carefully — keeping the horizon centered and avoiding strong straight lines near the edges — you can minimise the barrel distortion and get shots that feel more like an extreme ultra-wide than a classic fisheye.

Question 4

Does the 8mm f/1.8 Fisheye Pro have image stabilisation?

Accepted Answer

No, the lens itself has no optical stabilisation. In practice this is rarely a problem, because at 8mm even modest shutter speeds freeze camera shake — and if your body has in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), that will still work with this lens. For astrophotography specifically, you'd typically want a wide-open aperture and a fast shutter anyway to keep stars sharp.

Question 5

Which cameras is the M.Zuiko 8mm f/1.8 Fisheye Pro compatible with?

Accepted Answer

The lens uses the Micro Four Thirds mount, so it works with any MFT-mount body — including OM System bodies like the OM-5 and OM-1, and Panasonic G-series bodies such as the G9 II. Autofocus, aperture control, and IBIS communication all work natively with compatible bodies.

Question 6

Is buying a used OM System 8mm f/1.8 Fisheye Pro a good idea?

Accepted Answer

It's a smart buy second-hand because this is a solidly built PRO-grade lens with weather sealing — the kind of lens that holds up well over years of use. Used copies are professionally inspected before sale and come with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're covered if anything's not right. The actual warranty period shown on your specific listing may be longer.

Question 7

What is the minimum focus distance of the Olympus 8mm 1.8 Fisheye?

Accepted Answer

The minimum focus distance is 0.12m — just 12 centimetres from the front of the lens. That's extremely close for a fisheye, and combined with the wide angle of view it creates a dramatic perspective distortion on close subjects: think insects, puddles, skateboards, or any creative close-up shot where you want to exaggerate depth.

Question 8

How does the 8mm f/1.8 compare to the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO?

Accepted Answer

The Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO M.Zuiko Digital ED is a rectilinear zoom — it keeps straight lines straight and covers a range of ultra-wide focal lengths, making it more versatile for architecture and landscape. The 8mm fisheye is a single focal length with intentional barrel distortion, but gains a full stop of light with its f/1.8 aperture. Choose the zoom for versatility and straight lines; choose the fisheye for creative distortion, low-light work, and astrophotography.
