Question 1

What does a center filter actually do?

Accepted Answer

A center filter is a special graduated neutral density filter that is darkest at the center and gradually becomes more transparent toward the edges. This counteracts the natural light falloff (vignetting) that wide-angle and super-wide lenses tend to produce, resulting in more even exposure across the entire frame.

Question 2

Which lenses is the Schneider Kreuznach Center-Filter III compatible with?

Accepted Answer

It fits any lens with a 67mm filter thread. Schneider Kreuznach center filters are most commonly used with wide-angle lenses on medium-format and large-format systems, where edge falloff is pronounced, but they work on any 67mm-threaded lens that suffers from vignetting.

Question 3

What does the multicoating on this filter do?

Accepted Answer

The multicoating (MC) reduces surface reflections and flare, which is especially important when shooting into bright light or using the filter outdoors. It also helps maintain color neutrality and contrast, so the filter itself doesn't degrade image quality beyond its intended light-balancing effect.

Question 4

Does a center filter reduce overall exposure?

Accepted Answer

Yes — because the center of the filter is darker than the edges, it reduces the total light reaching the sensor or film. You'll typically need to compensate by opening up your aperture or increasing exposure time. The exact amount of compensation depends on the specific density of the filter you're using.

Question 5

Is buying a used Schneider Kreuznach Center-Filter III worth it?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Glass filters from Schneider Kreuznach are built to last, and a used example in good condition performs identically to a new one. At Camera-tweedehands.nl, every filter is hand-inspected for coating damage and thread integrity. Every item comes with a minimum 12 months warranty.

Question 6

Can I stack the Schneider Kreuznach Center-Filter III with other filters?

Accepted Answer

Stacking is physically possible if the other filter also has a 67mm thread, but it's generally not recommended. Adding extra glass elements in front of a wide-angle lens increases the risk of additional vignetting, flare, and image degradation. For best results, use the center filter on its own.
