Question 1

What format does the Schneider Kreuznach Super-Angulon 65mm f/8 cover?

Accepted Answer

The Super-Angulon 65mm f/8 produces a 170mm image circle. It covers 4x5 inch film, but the margin is tight — camera movements like tilt and shift are possible but limited at that format. On smaller formats like 6x9 or 2x3, coverage is more generous and movements become more practical.

Question 2

Is the Schneider Super-Angulon 65mm f/8 good for landscape photography?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the 65mm focal length on large format delivers a wide-angle perspective that suits landscapes and environmental scenes well. The f/8 maximum aperture is typical for this class of large format lens and perfectly adequate since large format shooters almost always work stopped down for depth of field.

Question 3

What shutter does the Super-Angulon 65mm f/8 use?

Accepted Answer

Copies of the Super-Angulon 65mm f/8 are typically found in a leaf shutter — verify the exact shutter type and condition when evaluating a specific used copy, as shutter speeds can drift over time and may benefit from a CLA (clean, lube, adjust) by a qualified technician.

Question 4

How does the Super-Angulon 65mm f/8 compare to the 65mm f/5.6 version?

Accepted Answer

The f/8 version is physically smaller and lighter than the f/5.6, which makes it popular with field camera and backpacking photographers. Since large format work typically happens at f/16–f/32, the difference in maximum aperture rarely matters in practice. If movements are a priority on 4x5, it's worth comparing image circle specs between the two versions before deciding.

Question 5

Is buying a used Schneider Super-Angulon 65mm f/8 worth it?

Accepted Answer

For large format photographers, buying second-hand is essentially standard practice — new large format lenses are rare and expensive. A well-maintained used Super-Angulon 65mm f/8 can last decades. At Camera-tweedehands.nl, each item is individually inspected and carries a minimum 12 months warranty, which takes much of the risk out of buying used.

Question 6

What should I check when buying a used Super-Angulon 65mm f/8?

Accepted Answer

Key things to look for: shutter speeds firing accurately across all settings, aperture blades that are oil-free and snap cleanly, glass elements free of fungus, haze, or deep scratches, and the lens board fitting or retaining ring in good condition. A sluggish shutter is common in older large format lenses but is usually fixable with a CLA from a technician.
