Question 1

How does the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art compare to the Canon 50mm f/1.4?

Accepted Answer

The Sigma 50mm Art uses a larger optical formula with a heavier, more robust metal build compared to Canon's lighter 50mm f/1.4 USM. The Sigma delivers sharper performance wide open at f/1.4, with better control of chromatic aberration and more pleasing out-of-focus rendering thanks to its nine rounded aperture blades. The trade-off is size and weight — the Sigma 50mm Art weighs 815 g, roughly double that of the Canon.

Question 2

Is the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art compatible with Canon mirrorless (RF mount) cameras?

Accepted Answer

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art comes in Canon EF mount, which is not natively compatible with Canon RF bodies. You can use it on Canon EOS R-series cameras with the official Canon EF-EOS R Mount Adapter, and autofocus will generally function — but for native RF performance you'd want a lens designed specifically for RF mount. If you're on a Canon EF DSLR body, no adapter is needed at all.

Question 3

What Canon cameras is the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art compatible with?

Accepted Answer

This lens uses the Canon EF mount, which fits all Canon EF and EF-S DSLRs — full-frame bodies like the Canon EOS 5D series, 6D series, and 1D series, as well as APS-C bodies like the Canon EOS 90D, 80D, and Rebel/xxxD line. On APS-C, the effective field of view becomes approximately 80mm due to the 1.6x crop factor, which still works well for portraits.

Question 4

Does the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art have image stabilisation?

Accepted Answer

No, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art does not include optical image stabilisation. For a 50mm prime, the wide f/1.4 aperture provides enough light to use fast shutter speeds in most situations, avoiding camera shake without stabilisation.

Question 5

What is the bokeh like on the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art?

Accepted Answer

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art has nine rounded aperture blades, which produce smooth, circular out-of-focus highlights across most of the aperture range. Shot wide open at f/1.4, the background separation is strong, and transitions from sharp to blurred areas are generally smooth. This quality makes it popular for portrait and wedding work.

Question 6

How close can you focus with the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art?

Accepted Answer

The minimum focus distance is 0.4 m (40 cm). That is slightly better than many competing 50mm primes and allows for detail shots, product photography or environmental portraits without needing macro lenses or extension tubes.

Question 7

Is the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art a good lens to buy second-hand?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the Art series lenses are built to professional standard with metal construction and durable internals, which means they tend to age well even with regular use. At Camera-tweedehands.nl each second-hand item is individually photographed and comes with minimum 12 months warranty, so you know exactly what you're getting.
