Question 1

How does the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM compare to the Sigma 50mm Art?

Accepted Answer

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art is sharper wide open and corrects more aberrations, making it a clinical precision tool. The EX DG HSM has a softer, more organic rendering at f/1.4 that many portrait photographers actually prefer — it's often compared to the Nikon 58mm f/1.4G in character rather than the razor-sharp Art. The EX DG HSM is also lighter and more compact, which matters on a long shoot day.

Question 2

Is the autofocus on the Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM reliable on Nikon?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the HSM (Hypersonic Motor) drives AF that's both fast and near-silent, which is a real advantage for candid street shooting or during a wedding ceremony. The AF system works directly off the camera body's commands and doesn't rely on a screwdriver-style motor, so it's compatible with all Nikon F-mount bodies including entry-level DSLRs without a built-in AF motor.

Question 3

What kind of bokeh does the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM produce?

Accepted Answer

The 9 rounded aperture blades create smooth, circular out-of-focus highlights even at mid-range apertures. Wide open at f/1.4, backgrounds dissolve into a creamy blur that's softer and less clinical than many modern fast primes. It's a look that works particularly well for portrait and wedding work where flattering subject isolation matters more than technical perfection.

Question 4

Does the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM have image stabilisation?

Accepted Answer

No, this lens does not include optical image stabilisation. For still subjects, the f/1.4 maximum aperture compensates by letting you use faster shutter speeds in low light. If camera shake is a concern, pairing it with a Nikon body that has in-body stabilisation (on compatible bodies) is the practical workaround.

Question 5

What filter size does the Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM use?

Accepted Answer

It takes 77 mm filters — the same size as That means if you already own 77 mm polarisers or ND filters for another lens, you can share them directly. It's a larger thread than budget 50mm primes, which reflects the bigger front element that contributes to the wide f/1.4 aperture.

Question 6

Is buying a used Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM worth it?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. This lens is built to professional standards with a robust metal barrel, and second-hand copies tend to hold up well over time. On Camera-tweedehands.nl every pre-owned lens is individually photographed and professionally inspected, and you get a minimum 12 months warranty — so you're not taking a blind gamble. It's a smart way to get a fast, character-rich 50mm prime for your Nikon F-mount DSLR without paying new-glass prices.
