Question 1

Is the Tamron SP AF 180mm f/3.5 Di Macro good for insect and nature macro photography?

Accepted Answer

Yes — and the 180mm focal length is actually a practical advantage here. Longer macro lenses let you keep more physical distance between your lens and your subject, which means you're less likely to spook insects or cast a shadow over your scene. At 1:1 magnification you get full life-size reproduction, while the f/3.5 aperture gives you enough light to work in shadier outdoor conditions without always relying on a flash.

Question 2

How does autofocus perform on a macro lens like this?

Accepted Answer

Macro lenses in general — including this Tamron — can hunt more slowly in AF than a standard prime, because precise macro focusing requires very fine, small steps across a long focus travel range. For stationary subjects like flowers or product shots it works reliably. For fast-moving insects in the field, most experienced macro photographers switch to manual focus anyway, and the large, well-damped focus ring on the 180mm Di makes manual operation genuinely pleasant to use.

Question 3

What's the difference between the Tamron 180mm macro and a 100mm macro lens?

Accepted Answer

The key practical difference is working distance: at 1:1 magnification, a 180mm macro keeps your lens tip significantly further from the subject compared to a 90mm or 100mm. That extra space is useful for lighting (room for a ring flash or diffuser), avoiding subject disturbance, and getting a shallower background blur at equivalent framing. The trade-off is that 180mm lenses are typically larger and slightly heavier. The Sony 100mm f/2.8 Macro is a common alternative if compactness matters more to you.

Question 4

Which Sony A-mount bodies is this lens compatible with?

Accepted Answer

The Sony A mount covers Sony's full-frame and APS-C DSLR lineup — bodies like the Sony Alpha SLT-A99, A77 II, A65, and similar A-mount cameras. The Di designation confirms the lens is designed to illuminate a full-frame sensor, so you're not limited to crop-sensor bodies. If you're using an A-mount body with a LA-EA adapter on a Sony E-mount mirrorless camera, autofocus behaviour will depend on the specific adapter and body combination.

Question 5

How does the Tamron 180mm f/3.5 macro compare to the Sigma 180mm f/3.5 macro?

Accepted Answer

Both lenses share the same focal length and maximum aperture, targeting the same working-distance advantage for macro and nature photography. The Tamron is frequently noted for its smooth manual focus ring and relatively lightweight build for its class. The Sigma 180mm f/3.5 is an alternative worth checking if you find a good second-hand deal, but either lens will deliver solid 1:1 macro performance. Availability on the used market tends to decide the choice as much as spec differences.

Question 6

Is buying a used Tamron SP AF 180mm f/3.5 Di Macro worth it?

Accepted Answer

Buying second-hand makes strong sense for a lens like this. Macro lenses tend to be used carefully by photographers who value precision — they're rarely subjected to the rough handling of a travel zoom. A pre-owned copy that's been inspected and graded gives you full optical and mechanical performance at a lower outlay. On Camera-tweedehands.nl every used lens comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're not taking a blind risk.
