Question 1

Does the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye work on a full-frame Nikon camera?

Accepted Answer

The lens is designed for APS-C (DX) sensors, so on a full-frame Nikon body you'll get heavy vignetting at most focal lengths. At 17mm it may partially cover the frame, but for proper full-frame fisheye results you'd need a lens built for that format. Stick to APS-C bodies for the intended 180° field of view at 10mm.

Question 2

Is the Tokina 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the f/3.5 maximum aperture at 10mm lets in a solid amount of light for night sky shooting, and the 180° diagonal field of view at 10mm captures a huge sweep of sky in a single frame. It's a popular choice for nightscape and Milky Way photography on crop-sensor Nikon bodies. Just keep in mind stars toward the edges will show the characteristic fisheye distortion.

Question 3

How does the Tokina 10-17mm compare to the Nikon AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED?

Accepted Answer

The Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED has a wider maximum aperture — roughly one stop faster — which gives it an edge in low light and for shallow-depth-of-field effects. However, the Tokina is a zoom lens covering 10mm to 17mm, so you get a range of fisheye perspectives rather than a single fixed angle. If you want flexibility across different compositions, the Tokina wins; if you prioritise maximum light gathering at a fixed focal length, the Nikkor is worth considering.

Question 4

Does the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye have autofocus on Nikon F mount bodies?

Accepted Answer

Yes — autofocus works via a screw-drive system, which means the AF motor comes from the camera body rather than the lens itself. On Nikon F mount DSLRs with a built-in focus motor (such as mid-range and pro bodies), autofocus works as expected. On entry-level Nikon DSLRs without a built-in screw-drive motor, you'll need to focus manually, so check your specific body's specs before buying.

Question 5

Is buying a used Tokina 10-17mm fisheye a safe choice?

Accepted Answer

It's one of the more durable lenses to buy second-hand — the AT-X build uses a metal lens body with minimal plastic, so used copies typically hold up well mechanically. On Camera-tweedehands.nl, every pre-owned lens is individually inspected and photographed, and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're covered if anything isn't right.

Question 6

What filter thread size does the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye use, and can you use ND or CPL filters?

Accepted Answer

The Tokina 10-17mm uses a 67mm filter thread. That said, using a standard screw-in CPL or ND filter on a fisheye is tricky — the extreme angle of view means the filter edges will appear in the frame, especially at 10mm. Thin-profile or specially cut filters designed for fisheye lenses are a better option if you need filtration.

Question 7

Can you use the Tokina 10-17mm on a Sony E mount or Canon EF camera?

Accepted Answer

This listing is specifically the Nikon F mount version. While third-party adapters exist for mounting Nikon F lenses on Sony E mount or Canon EF bodies, autofocus and electronic communication are not guaranteed to work reliably. For native mount performance, use it on a Nikon F mount DSLR as intended.
