Question 1

Is the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro FX good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the constant f/2.8 aperture lets in a lot of light, which is exactly what you need for Milky Way and star-trail shots. The 16mm end gives you a wide enough field of view to capture large sections of sky in a single frame. Keep in mind there is no image stabilisation, so you'll be relying on a sturdy tripod and correct shutter speed to control star trailing.

Question 2

Does the Tokina 16-28mm f 2.8 work on full-frame Nikon bodies?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it's a full-frame (FX) lens designed specifically for the Nikon F mount, so it covers the full sensor on bodies like the Nikon D800, D810, D750, and D850 without vignetting. It also fits APS-C (DX) Nikon bodies, where the 16mm end effectively becomes around 24mm.

Question 3

How does the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 compare to the Nikon 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED?

Accepted Answer

The Tokina gives you a wider starting point at 16mm versus 18mm, and — crucially — a constant f/2.8 aperture compared to the Nikon's variable f/3.5-4.5. That makes the Tokina noticeably better in low light and for astrophotography. The trade-off is size and weight: the Tokina is a bigger, heavier lens. Both use the Nikon F mount and cover full-frame sensors.

Question 4

Does the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 have a filter thread?

Accepted Answer

No — the front element is bulbous and protrudes, which is common for ultra-wide lenses of this design. This means standard screw-in filters cannot be attached to the front. The lens does include a built-in lens hood, though. If you need to use filters, you'd need a specialised rear gel filter holder.

Question 5

Is buying a used Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 worth it?

Accepted Answer

It makes a lot of sense. This is a well-built professional-grade lens and pre-owned copies regularly show only cosmetic wear with fully functional optics and autofocus. Every used lens on Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're not taking a gamble on an untested item from a private seller.

Question 6

What's the closest you can focus with the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8?

Accepted Answer

The minimum focus distance is 0.27 m — that's pretty close for an ultra-wide zoom and handy for environmental portraits or wide-angle close-ups where you want dramatic perspective with a sharp foreground subject. Combined with the 16mm end, this lets you get very close to a subject while still capturing a broad background.
