Question 1

Is the Tokina 17-35mm f/4 AT-X Pro FX good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

The 17mm end is genuinely useful for astrophotography — it captures a wide swath of sky in a single frame, which is great for Milky Way shots or wide-field constellation images. The constant f/4 aperture is a bit slower than dedicated astro favourites, so pair it with a body that handles high ISO well and you'll get clean results. For static star shots rather than tracked exposures, f/4 at 17mm still works well on a capable full-frame body.

Question 2

What Canon cameras is this lens compatible with?

Accepted Answer

The Tokina 17-35mm f/4 AT-X Pro FX uses a Canon EF mount, so it fits any Canon EF-mount DSLR — full-frame bodies like the Canon EOS 5D series and crop-sensor bodies like the Canon EOS 90D or 850D. On a crop-sensor body the effective field of view becomes roughly 27–56mm, which reduces the ultra-wide character significantly, so full-frame is where this lens really shines.

Question 3

How does the Tokina 17-35mm f/4 compare to the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM?

Accepted Answer

The Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM adds image stabilisation and Canon's L-series build, which typically means better weather sealing and autofocus consistency. The Tokina AT-X Pro FX trades those premium features for a noticeably lower price on the used market, making it an appealing option if you're shooting from a tripod most of the time — where IS matters less — or if the budget is a real consideration.

Question 4

Is buying a used Tokina 17-35mm f/4 worth it?

Accepted Answer

Buying a used Tokina 17-35mm f/4 AT-X Pro FX is a smart move if you want full-frame ultra-wide coverage without paying new prices. Tokina's AT-X Pro series and a second-hand copy in good condition can deliver sharp centre results across the zoom range. At Camera-tweedehands.nl every lens is individually inspected and photographed, and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty — so you know exactly what you're getting.

Question 5

Does the Tokina AT-X Pro FX 17-35mm f4 work on a crop-sensor Canon DSLR?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Canon EF mount means it mounts on any Canon EF-body, including APS-C crop-sensor DSLRs. However, on a 1.6x crop sensor the effective focal length becomes approximately 27–56mm — you lose the ultra-wide character almost entirely. For landscape and astro work where the 17mm field of view matters, a full-frame body gets the most out of this lens.

Question 6

What is the difference between the Tokina 17-35mm f/4 and the Tokina AT-X Pro 16-28mm f/2.8 FX?

Accepted Answer

The main trade-off is aperture versus zoom range. The Tokina AT-X Pro 16-28mm f/2.8 FX opens up to f/2.8, which is a full stop faster — valuable for hand-held low-light shooting or astrophotography without a tracker. The 17-35mm f/4 extends to 35mm on the tele end, giving you more compositional flexibility for landscapes and travel. If low-light performance is your priority, the f/2.8 variant is worth considering; if zoom range matters more, the 17-35mm f/4 wins.
