Question 1

What is the difference between the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.5 Type I and Type II?

Accepted Answer

The Type II features a revised, modern aspherical optical design that improves correction across the frame compared to the older Type I. The Type II holds up well even on high-resolution M-mount bodies like the 40MP Leica M10-R, where older designs tend to show more weakness in the corners wide open. The Type I had a more vintage rendering character; the Type II is sharper and more controlled, though it still has some glow in transition zones at f/1.5.

Question 2

How sharp is the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm 1.5 Type II wide open?

Accepted Answer

Centre sharpness at f/1.5 is genuinely good — admirable for an f/1.5 lens — with a characteristic glow and softer corners that many rangefinder shooters actually prefer for portraits and street work. Stop down to f/4–f/5.6 and the corners tighten up considerably. It performs confidently on high-resolution sensors, which is a real benchmark for any M-mount optic.

Question 3

Is the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.5 good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

It's a usable astro lens — f/1.5 pulls in plenty of light for Milky Way or star-trail shots, and the 0.5m minimum focus distance is fine for foreground elements. Bear in mind that fast wide-angle lenses almost always show some coma or corner softness at maximum aperture, so stopping down to f/2–f/2.8 typically gives cleaner star points toward the edges of the frame. The 12-blade aperture also produces smooth, rounded star diffraction spikes when stopped down.

Question 4

Does the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.5 Type II fit Leica M film cameras like the M6?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the Leica M bayonet is shared across M-mount film and digital bodies, so the lens couples to the rangefinder mechanism on cameras like the Leica M6 just as it does on modern digital M bodies. The 6-bit coding found on some M-mount Voigtländer lenses helps with EXIF and auto-correction on digital bodies, but the mechanical coupling works universally across the M system.

Question 5

How does the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm 1.5 compare to the Voigtlander 35mm f/2?

Accepted Answer

The two smallest current 35mm options for M mount from Voigtländer sit at different ends of the speed spectrum. The f/2 Skopar variants are even lighter and more compact, with a more restrained wide-open rendering. The Nokton 35mm f/1.5 adds a full stop of light and a more pronounced background separation at wide apertures, which matters a lot in low light. If you mostly shoot in daylight, the f/2 is the easier carry; if you regularly shoot after dark, the f/1.5's extra stop earns its slightly larger size.

Question 6

What filter size does the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.5 Type II use?

Accepted Answer

The filter thread is 39mm — the same classic size used on many M-mount and vintage lenses, so filters and lens hoods designed for Leica 39mm threads will fit directly. It's worth noting that 39mm screw-fit accessories are widely available and often inexpensive second-hand.

Question 7

Is buying a used Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.5 worth it?

Accepted Answer

A used copy is a smart way into one of the fastest current-production 35mm lenses available for M mount. These are all-metal, manual-focus lenses with no electronic moving parts to fail, which makes them well-suited to the second-hand market — condition and optics are really what you're evaluating, not firmware or motor wear. Every used lens on Camera-tweedehands.nl comes with minimum 12 months warranty and is individually inspected, so you're not buying blind.

Question 8

Does the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.5 Type II work on mirrorless cameras with an adapter?

Accepted Answer

Yes — with a Leica M to Sony E, Nikon Z, or similar adapter, this lens works on any mirrorless body that supports manual-focus M-mount glass. Focus peaking and magnified live view on mirrorless bodies actually makes manual focusing easier than on a rangefinder for some shooters. There's no electronic communication, so aperture and focus are entirely manual, which suits the lens's design.
