Question 1

Is the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 VM sharp wide open?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Nokton 50mm f/1.5 VM is considered impressive wide open for an M-mount lens at this price point. The rendering style is high-contrast and modern rather than soft or dreamy, so subjects appear sharp and three-dimensional even at f/1.5. Stopping down to f/2.8 or f/4 pushes it into very strong territory across the frame.

Question 2

What cameras does the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm 1.5 VM work on?

Accepted Answer

The VM mount is the Leica M bayonet, so the lens works natively on any Leica M-mount camera — both digital and film bodies. With a compatible M-to-X adapter it also fits mirrorless systems like Sony E-mount, Leica SL, Nikon Z, and Fujifilm GFX. Manual focus and stop-down metering apply in all cases.

Question 3

How does the Nokton 50mm f/1.5 compare to the Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4?

Accepted Answer

The Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH is a benchmark lens and optically among the finest 50mm designs ever made, but it comes at a dramatically higher price. The Nokton 50mm f/1.5 VM doesn't fully close that gap, but it delivers high-contrast, detailed results that many photographers find more than satisfying for real-world use — especially for street, travel, and portrait work. For most shooters, the value proposition of the Nokton is hard to ignore.

Question 4

Is there a difference between the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 and the Aspherical version?

Accepted Answer

The Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 Aspherical II uses an aspherical lens element to reduce aberrations and improve wide-open sharpness compared to the older spherical design. If the listing specifies 'Aspherical', you're getting the updated optical formula. Check the product description carefully to confirm which version you're purchasing.

Question 5

Does the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 VM have autofocus?

Accepted Answer

No — this is a fully manual focus lens. There is no autofocus motor of any kind. On Leica M bodies you focus using the rangefinder patch; on mirrorless cameras via adapter you rely on focus peaking or magnified live view. This is part of the lens's deliberate, traditional design philosophy.

Question 6

How does the Nokton 50mm 1.5 compare to the Voigtlander VM 50mm f/1.2 Nokton?

Accepted Answer

The Voigtlander VM 50mm f/1.2 Nokton is a full stop faster and is widely regarded as the sharper performer with better control of aberrations at maximum aperture — but it's physically larger and heavier. The 50mm f/1.5 is the more pocketable, lower-profile choice that still delivers great results. If size and discretion matter — especially for street or travel — the f/1.5 is the more practical pick.

Question 7

Is buying a used Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 worth it?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Manual focus lenses like the Nokton age well because they have no autofocus mechanics to wear out. A second-hand copy in good condition will perform identically to a new one optically. Just verify the aperture blades are oil-free and the focus helicoid moves smoothly. Buying used through a platform that offers minimum 12 months warranty and professional inspection — like Camera-tweedehands.nl — removes most of the risk.

Question 8

What filter size does the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 VM use?

Accepted Answer

The filter thread size is not listed in the official spec sheet, so check the individual product listing for confirmation. The 49mm size is commonly cited for this lens online, but verify before purchasing a filter to be sure you're getting the right fit.
