Question 1

What size lenses does a 43mm UV filter fit?

Accepted Answer

A 43mm UV filter fits any lens with a 43mm filter thread. You can check the diameter by looking at the front of the lens barrel or inside the lens cap — it's marked with the ⌀ symbol followed by '43'. Compact primes and pancake lenses often use this size.

Question 2

Does a UV filter affect image quality or exposure?

Accepted Answer

A good-quality UV filter has negligible impact on exposure. In rare high-contrast scenes you might notice a very slight increase in flare, but for most everyday shooting — landscapes, street, travel — you won't see a meaningful difference in your images.

Question 3

Is buying a used UV filter a good idea?

Accepted Answer

Yes — filters are low-complexity accessories with no moving parts or electronics, making them one of the safest second-hand purchases in photography. Just check for scratches or coating damage on the glass before use. Every used filter on Camera-tweedehands.nl is individually inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty.

Question 4

Can I leave a UV filter on my lens permanently?

Accepted Answer

Many photographers do exactly that — using a UV filter as a permanent lens protector. Just make sure to clean it regularly, as a dirty filter can reduce contrast more than a bare lens would. Also consider removing it when shooting in very controlled indoor light where flare risk is zero and protection isn't needed.

Question 5

Is a UV filter the same as a clear protective filter?

Accepted Answer

Functionally they're very similar in modern digital photography. A UV filter blocks ultraviolet wavelengths (which digital sensors are already less sensitive to than film), while a clear protection filter doesn't filter any light at all. Both serve primarily as physical lens protection — the choice between them mostly comes down to brand preference and coating quality.

Question 6

Do I need a UV filter if my lens already has weather sealing?

Accepted Answer

Weather sealing protects internal lens elements from moisture and dust entering the barrel, but it doesn't protect the exposed front glass from scratches, sand, or impact. A UV filter adds that extra physical layer of protection for the front element — which is often the most expensive part to replace if damaged.
