Question 1

Does the Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZE have autofocus on Canon EF bodies?

Accepted Answer

No — the ZE is a fully manual focus lens. It does pass aperture control data to the Canon EF body electronically, so EXIF data is recorded and the camera's metering works normally, but you focus by hand every single time. This is a conscious design choice by Zeiss, not a limitation — the focus ring is metal, well-damped, and has a long, smooth throw that makes precise focus a pleasure rather than a chore.

Question 2

What is the difference between the Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZE and the ZF.2?

Accepted Answer

The ZE version uses a Canon EF mount and communicates with Canon bodies electronically. The ZF.2 version uses a Nikon F mount with Nikon's CPU chip for electronic communication. The optical formula, aperture, and build are essentially the same — the mount is the only meaningful difference. If you shoot Canon, go ZE; Nikon shooters want the ZF.2.

Question 3

How does the Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.4 ZE compare to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4?

Accepted Answer

The Canon 50mm f/1.4 offers autofocus and costs less, but the Zeiss is built entirely from metal — body, focus ring, even the lens hood — which gives it a noticeably more solid, premium feel. Optically, the Zeiss T* coating helps with contrast and flare resistance. If you prioritise AF convenience, the Canon wins; if you want build quality and a more engaging manual shooting experience, the Zeiss is the stronger choice.

Question 4

What aperture is the Zeiss Planar T* 50mm 1.4 sharpest at?

Accepted Answer

Many photographers find peak sharpness across the frame between f/2 and f/5.6. Wide open at f/1.4 centre sharpness is strong, but corners sharpen up noticeably as you stop down to f/2 or f/2.8 — which is exactly where most portrait and street shooters end up anyway. For flat subjects or landscapes, f/5.6 to f/8 gives edge-to-edge consistency.

Question 5

Is the 9-blade aperture on the ZE noticeable in real-world shooting?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and in a good way. Nine blades produce a near-circular opening even when stopped down slightly, which keeps out-of-focus highlights (bokeh balls) round and smooth rather than turning them into polygons. For portrait and wedding work where background lights or foliage appear in the frame, this makes a visible difference to the feel of the image.

Question 6

Is buying a used Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZE a safe choice?

Accepted Answer

It's one of the more sensible second-hand lens purchases you can make. The all-metal construction ages well and there are no autofocus motors to wear out — the only real wear point is the aperture mechanism and optics. Every pre-owned lens on Camera-tweedehands.nl is individually inspected and photographed, and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you can buy with confidence.

Question 7

Which Canon EF cameras work best with the Zeiss Planar T* 50mm 1.4 ZE?

Accepted Answer

Any Canon EF-mount DSLR body is fully compatible — the lens communicates electronically via the EF mount, so aperture control, metering, and EXIF recording all function. Bodies with high-resolution sensors or live-view magnification (useful for nailing manual focus) get the most out of the Zeiss's resolving power. Full-frame bodies make the most of the 50mm field of view, while APS-C bodies see it as a short telephoto equivalent around 80mm.

Question 8

What filter size does the Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZE use?

Accepted Answer

The filter thread is 58 mm. That's a fairly common size, so circular polarisers, ND filters, and UV protectors are widely available without needing step-up rings. Worth noting if you already own 58 mm filters for another lens.
