Question 1

What does a circular polarizing filter actually do?

Accepted Answer

A CPL filter lets you rotate the front element to block polarised light at a specific angle. In practice that means richer, darker blue skies, eliminated reflections on water or glass, and better colour saturation in foliage — effects you simply cannot replicate in post-processing.

Question 2

What is Zeiss T* coating and why does it matter on a CPL?

Accepted Answer

T* is Zeiss's proprietary multi-layer anti-reflection coating. On a polarising filter it reduces the surface reflections and ghosting that are especially noticeable when shooting into the light, helping maintain the contrast and colour accuracy the coating

Question 3

Which lenses use a 72mm filter thread?

Accepted Answer

72mm is a common thread size for mid-range zoom lenses and some fast primes. Always check your lens cap or the inside of your lens barrel — the filter diameter is printed there, usually preceded by the ø symbol.

Question 4

Is buying a used Zeiss polarising filter worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes — a CPL is a passive optical element with no electronics or moving parts beyond the rotating ring. A second-hand filter in good condition performs identically to a new one, and every item on Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty.

Question 5

How do I use a circular polarising filter correctly?

Accepted Answer

Mount the filter, then slowly rotate the front ring while looking through the viewfinder or at your live-view screen. The effect is strongest when you're shooting at roughly 90 degrees to the sun. At 0 or 180 degrees to the light source you'll see little to no polarising effect.

Question 6

Does a CPL filter reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a polarising filter typically cuts about 1.5 to 2 stops of light. Factor that in when setting your exposure, especially in lower-light conditions or if you want to maintain a fast shutter speed.
