Question 1

Does a UV filter affect image quality?

Accepted Answer

A quality UV filter has minimal impact on sharpness or colour when it's clean and undamaged. The main risk with cheap filters is added flare in backlit situations, so it's worth inspecting the coatings before shooting into the sun.

Question 2

Which lenses use a 72mm filter thread?

Accepted Answer

The 72mm filter size appears on a range of mid-range zoom and prime lenses across different brands. The surest way to confirm is to look at the inside of your lens cap or the barrel itself — it will show a ⌀72 marking. Never assume based on focal length or aperture alone, as thread sizes vary even within the same lens family.

Question 3

Is a UV filter still useful on a digital camera?

Accepted Answer

Modern digital sensors already block UV light internally, so a UV filter no longer affects colour or haze the way it did on film. Its real job today is lens protection — it keeps the front element safe from knocks, rain and grime, and costs far less to replace than the lens itself.

Question 4

Is buying a used UV filter worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes — a UV filter is a passive piece of glass with no moving parts, so wear is easy to spot visually. Check the listing photos for scratches, chips or delaminated coatings. A second-hand filter in clean condition performs identically to a new one, and the minimum 12 months warranty means you're covered if something unexpected comes up.

Question 5

Can I stack a UV filter with a polariser or ND filter?

Accepted Answer

Technically yes, but stacking filters on a wide-angle lens can introduce vignetting at the corners. Most photographers remove the UV filter when adding a polariser or ND, rather than stacking, to keep optical quality clean.

Question 6

How do I clean a UV filter without scratching it?

Accepted Answer

Use a microfibre cloth or lens tissue with a small drop of lens cleaning fluid, wiping in gentle circular motions from the centre outward. Avoid paper towels or shirt fabric — they're coarse enough to leave micro-scratches on filter coatings over time.
