Question 1

Does a UV filter affect image quality?

Accepted Answer

A decent-quality UV filter has minimal impact on sharpness or colour in most real-world shooting. Lower-quality filters can introduce flare or slight colour casts in strong backlit situations, so using it with the lens hood on helps. Indoors or in controlled light, you'd typically see no difference at all.

Question 2

What lenses use an 82mm filter thread?

Accepted Answer

82mm is a common thread size on larger-aperture zoom lenses and fast wide-angle primes. Many modern mirrorless and DSLR lenses in the mid-to-telephoto range use this size — always check your specific lens cap or barrel ring to confirm before buying.

Question 3

Is a UV filter still useful with digital cameras?

Accepted Answer

Digital sensors don't need UV filtering the way film did, so the optical UV-cutting benefit is largely irrelevant today. The real reason most photographers keep one on is physical protection — a cracked UV filter after a knock costs far less than a damaged front element or coating repair.

Question 4

Is buying a used UV filter safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as long as the glass is free of deep scratches, fungus or delamination — all things that get checked during inspection here. Buying a second-hand UV filter makes a lot of sense because filters lead a static life on the front of a lens and rarely show meaningful wear. Every used filter on Camera-tweedehands.nl comes with a minimum 12 months warranty.

Question 5

Can I stack a UV filter with a polariser or ND filter?

Accepted Answer

You can, but it's generally not recommended. Stacking filters on a wide-angle lens increases the risk of vignetting, especially at the wider end of a zoom. Most photographers choose one filter at a time, or switch the UV filter out when using a polariser or ND.

Question 6

How do I clean a UV filter without scratching it?

Accepted Answer

Use a blower to remove loose dust first, then a clean microfibre cloth with a small amount of lens cleaning fluid — never dry-wipe. Circular motions from centre outward work well. Avoid tissues or clothing, which can leave micro-scratches on the coatings over time.
