Used UV filters

A used UV filter is a smart purchase: glass doesn't wear out, so a used example in good condition performs just as well as new. The most important thing is that the filter has the right diameter for your lens and that the coating is intact.

What to look out for in a used UV filter

Check the filter size in millimetres — it must match the filter thread of your lens exactly. Also look for small scratches on the glass, damage to the coating (especially with multi-coated MRC and Nano filters) and whether the ring is free of bends, so that it screws on and off smoothly. Multi-coated filters, such as the B+W MRC and MRC Nano series, give fewer reflections and less flare and are easier to keep clean than uncoated ones.
