Question 1

What is the difference between a clear filter and a UV filter?

Accepted Answer

A clear filter has no optical effect at all — it passes 100% of light through without filtering any wavelengths. A UV filter blocks ultraviolet light, which can reduce haze in certain outdoor conditions. On modern digital sensors, UV filtration rarely makes a visible difference, so both filter types are primarily used for physical lens protection on digital cameras.

Question 2

What does MRC coating mean on a B+W filter?

Accepted Answer

MRC stands for Multi-Resistant Coating. It's a multi-layer coating applied to both sides of the filter glass that repels water, grease and fingerprints, and also reduces reflections. The 'Basic' version uses a proven MRC formula that keeps image quality high and makes the filter surface easy to wipe clean in the field.

Question 3

Which lenses use a 67mm filter thread?

Accepted Answer

A 67mm filter thread is common on a range of popular lenses, including many standard zoom lenses in the 18-105mm and 16-80mm range, as well as some telephoto primes and mid-range zooms from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm and others. Always check your lens cap or barrel markings — the filter size is printed as ⌀67 — before purchasing.

Question 4

Is buying a used B+W filter worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes, used B+W filters are a smart buy because the quality glass and coatings don't degrade over time the way electronics do. As long as the filter has no scratches or coating damage — which is checked before listing — you get the same optical performance as new. Every second-hand filter on Camera-tweedehands.nl comes with a minimum 12 months warranty and is individually photographed so you can see the actual item.

Question 5

Does a clear filter reduce image quality or sharpness?

Accepted Answer

A high-quality clear filter like this B+W MRC Basic has negligible impact on sharpness when clean and scratch-free. The risk to image quality comes mainly from cheap filters with poor glass or single-layer coatings that cause reflections and flare. The MRC coating on this filter reduces surface reflections, keeping contrast and clarity intact.

Question 6

Can I stack this filter with a polariser or ND filter?

Accepted Answer

Technically yes — the 67mm thread allows stacking — but it's generally not recommended. Stacking filters increases the chance of vignetting, especially on wide-angle lenses, and adds more glass surfaces that can introduce reflections. For most situations, you'd use the clear filter as a permanent protector and swap it out when you want to shoot with a polariser or ND.
