A used Nikon DSLR is a smart purchase, precisely because these bodies are built to be worked hard. The difference between a good and a not-so-good used buy lies mainly in how the camera has been treated, not in its age on paper.
What should you look out for?
With a DSLR, always check the shutter count: it says more about the wear than the year of manufacture. Inspect the sensor and mirror for dust and scratches, test whether the autofocus focuses quickly and accurately, and check the rubbers and grip for wear. With every Nikon on our platform this has already been done — every body is professionally inspected and graded by condition, so you know exactly what you're getting.
Which Nikon is for whom?
If you're just starting out or want a reliable all-round body, the Nikon D500 is a fine choice: compact for a pro model, fast and with the same familiar Nikon handling. If you shoot landscape, studio or weddings and want maximum image quality, you're well served by full-frame flagships such as the Nikon D850 or the Nikon D810. If you shoot sport, wildlife or action, the blisteringly fast Nikon D500 or a pro body like the Nikon D5 (Dual XQD) or even the Nikon D6 is your best friend. Don't forget to take a look at the Nikon lenses as well — a good lens gets the most out of your body.
Warranty and peace of mind
Every used Nikon comes with at least 12 months' warranty and a 14-day right of return, so you can take your time trying out whether the camera suits you. Torn between DSLR and mirrorless? Then include the broader DSLR category in your comparison too.
