Buying medium format used is the smartest route into this segment, but it pays to know what you're looking at. The big gains are in resolution, dynamic range and file quality — perfect if you make large prints, want plenty of room to crop or work in the studio under controlled light. Bear in mind that these systems are deliberately slow and considered: nothing for fast action, everything for maximum image quality.
What to look out for when buying used
With a body or back, pay particular attention to the sensor surface (dust, scratches or dead pixels), the number of shots taken and the condition of the screen and the mount. Digital backs are modular: always check that the back and the mount fit your body — a P-series or IQ back exists in V-mount, Mamiya 645 and Phase One XF versions. All cameras with us are professionally inspected, come with a warranty of at least 12 months and you have a 14-day return period, so you can take your time testing whether the system suits you.
Who is medium format for?
This is gear for the photographer who puts quality above speed: studio, fashion, portrait, architecture, landscape and reproduction. Torn between mobile and modular? Then compare the compact Hasselblad X2D 100c or the modular Hasselblad 907X CFV 100C system with a Fujifilm GFX 100S II, and look in the main cameras category if you're also considering full frame.
