Question 1

Which Canon RF lenses are compatible with the RF 2x Extender?

Accepted Answer

The Canon RF 2x Extender is designed to work with select Canon RF telephoto lenses — typically longer, fast-aperture primes and zooms. Not every RF lens is compatible, so check Canon's official compatibility list for your specific lens before buying.

Question 2

How much does the RF 2x Extender affect image quality?

Accepted Answer

Any 2x teleconverter introduces some optical trade-offs — you'll see a slight reduction in sharpness and contrast compared to shooting without it. That said, Canon designed the RF 2x Extender specifically for RF glass, so optical performance holds up well when paired with a high-quality host lens.

Question 3

Does the Canon RF 2x Extender affect autofocus speed?

Accepted Answer

Yes — doubling the focal length also costs you two stops of light, which can slow autofocus on some bodies and lenses, especially in low light. On a Canon EOS R-series body with a fast RF telephoto, AF still works, but you may notice a performance dip compared to shooting without the extender.

Question 4

What's the aperture loss when using a 2x extender?

Accepted Answer

A 2x extender reduces maximum aperture by exactly two stops. So an f/2.8 lens becomes f/5.6, and an f/4 lens becomes f/8. This matters for both exposure and autofocus, so pairing the RF 2x Extender with a fast telephoto gives you the most useful results.

Question 5

Is buying a used Canon RF 2x Extender worth it?

Accepted Answer

Teleconverters are excellent candidates for buying second-hand — they have no moving parts, no autofocus motor, and no image stabilisation system to wear out. A pre-owned Canon RF 2x Extender in good condition performs identically to a new one. Every used item on Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty.

Question 6

Will the Canon RF 2x Extender work on EF lenses with an adapter?

Accepted Answer

No — the RF 2x Extender uses a Canon RF mount and is designed specifically for native RF lenses. It does not slot between an EF lens and the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. For EF telephoto reach, the older Canon Extender EF 2x III is the relevant option.
