Question 1

Is the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM good for portraits?

Accepted Answer

Yes — 85mm is widely considered one of the best focal lengths for portraiture because it compresses the scene just enough to render facial proportions in a flattering, natural way. The f/1.2 aperture lets you isolate a subject against a creamy, soft background even in cluttered environments. The 9-blade rounded aperture contributes to smooth, circular bokeh. Combined with USM autofocus, which locks onto eyes quickly on compatible Canon RF camera bodies, it's a dependable choice for both studio sessions and on-location portrait work.

Question 2

Is the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

It performs well for astrophotography. The f/1.2 aperture allows very short exposures, which reduces star trailing and lets you keep ISO lower — both key advantages when shooting the night sky. The lens is sharp across the frame even wide open, which matters for astrophotography where you need stars to render as pinpoints rather than blobs. The 82mm filter thread also makes it compatible with clip-in and screw-on light-pollution filters.

Question 3

Does the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 have image stabilisation?

Accepted Answer

No, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM does not have optical image stabilisation built into the lens. If your Canon RF camera body has in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), that will compensate for camera shake. For static subjects like portraits or landscapes, the lack of lens IS is rarely a problem; the wide f/1.2 aperture lets you use faster shutter speeds in low light anyway.

Question 4

What Canon RF cameras is this lens compatible with?

Accepted Answer

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM fits any camera with a Canon RF mount — full-frame bodies like the Canon EOS R5, Canon EOS R6, Canon EOS R, and Canon EOS RP, as well as APS-C RF-mount bodies. On a full-frame body you get the true 85mm field of view. On an APS-C body the equivalent focal length is around 136mm, which tightens the framing considerably — still usable for portraits but you'll need more working distance from your subject.

Question 5

How does the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 compare to the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM?

Accepted Answer

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is an EF-mount lens that requires an adapter on RF-mount bodies; it also has built-in image stabilisation, which the RF version lacks. The RF 85mm f/1.2 wins on maximum aperture (f/1.2 vs f/1.4), native mount integration for faster AF response, and overall rendering at wide apertures. The EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is lighter and often available at a lower price point second-hand, making it a reasonable alternative if budget is a factor and you already own an EF adapter.

Question 6

What is the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM DS variant?

Accepted Answer

The DS (Defocus Smoothing) variant of the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 uses a special coating on certain lens elements to produce a softer, more graduated out-of-focus transition — a look inspired by classic portrait lenses. The standard Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM (the non-DS version) renders bokeh in a more conventional, modern way and retains slightly more edge contrast in the background blur. If dreamy, painterly bokeh is your priority the DS is worth seeking out; for sharper, more contrasty rendering the standard version is the better pick.

Question 7

Is the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 weather sealed?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM has dust and moisture resistance built in, consistent with Canon's L-series sealing standard. This makes it practical for shooting outdoor weddings, events in light rain, or dusty environments without worrying about lens damage. For full protection pair it with a weather-sealed RF camera body.

Question 8

How heavy is the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM?

Accepted Answer

It weighs 1,260g and measures 103mm in diameter by 117mm in length. That makes it one of the heavier 85mm options on the market. For handheld shooting over a full wedding day, the weight is noticeable — a peak-design strap or a lens support collar can help. The trade-off is the optical quality you get from the large glass elements needed to achieve f/1.2 across a full-frame image circle.

Question 9

Is buying a used Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM worth it?

Accepted Answer

Buying a second-hand Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is a smart move. L-series lenses are built to withstand professional use, so a well-maintained copy functions exactly like a new one. Buying used brings the cost down while still giving you the same optical performance. On Camera-tweedehands.nl every lens is individually inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're not taking a blind punt — check the variant listing for the exact warranty on each copy.

Question 10

What filter size does the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 use?

Accepted Answer

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM uses an 82mm filter thread. That's a common professional filter size, so polarisers, ND filters, and UV filters in 82mm are widely available. If you own other L-series lenses with 82mm threads you can share filters between them, which saves money.

Question 11

Does the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 work well for street photography?

Accepted Answer

It can, especially in low-light street situations where the f/1.2 aperture lets you shoot at lower ISOs and faster shutters than most lenses allow. The main challenge for street use is the 0.85m minimum focus distance — you need to be at least 85cm from your subject to lock focus, which means you can't shoot extremely close. At 1,260g it's also heavier than typical street lenses. That said, for atmospheric, shallow-depth-of-field street portraits at dusk or under neon lighting, it produces outstanding results.

Question 12

What is the minimum focus distance of the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM?

Accepted Answer

The minimum focus distance is 0.85 metres (85cm), with a maximum magnification of 0.12x. This is not a macro lens — it's designed for medium-distance portraiture rather than close-up detail shots. For reference, at 0.85m you can fill the frame with a head-and-shoulders crop on a full-frame sensor, which is exactly the working distance most portrait photographers prefer.
