Question 1

What lenses use a 145mm filter thread?

Accepted Answer

A 145mm filter thread is a large, specialist size found on certain super-telephoto prime lenses and some specialty cinema or video lenses. It's much less common than standard sizes like 77mm or 82mm, so always double-check your lens cap or the inside of your lens hood before ordering — the filter thread diameter is usually printed there.

Question 2

What does 'MC' mean on a UV filter?

Accepted Answer

MC stands for multi-coated. This means the filter glass has multiple anti-reflection layers applied to each surface, which reduces lens flare, ghosting and colour shifts compared to a single-coated or uncoated filter — especially useful when shooting into bright light or at large apertures.

Question 3

Do I actually need a UV filter on a modern digital camera?

Accepted Answer

Modern digital sensors are much less sensitive to UV light than film, so the UV-blocking benefit is minimal in most situations. Where a UV filter like this genuinely earns its place is as a clear protective layer for your expensive front element — keeping out dust, moisture splashes and the odd accidental knock without affecting image quality noticeably.

Question 4

Is buying a used UV filter safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes, buying a second-hand UV filter is low risk as long as you check for scratches, chips or heavy coating wear on the glass. Pre-owned filters on Camera-tweedehands.nl are individually inspected before listing, and every item comes with a minimum 12 months warranty — so you're covered if something isn't right.

Question 5

Will this Fotodiox UV filter affect image sharpness or colour?

Accepted Answer

A good multi-coated filter from Fotodiox is designed to be optically neutral — the goal is zero visible impact on sharpness or colour rendition under normal conditions. Low-quality uncoated filters can introduce colour casts or flare; the MC coating on this one is there specifically to prevent that.

Question 6

Can I stack this UV filter with other filters?

Accepted Answer

Technically yes, but stacking filters at 145mm gets expensive and physically tricky. More importantly, stacking any two filters increases the risk of vignetting on wide-angle lenses and can introduce additional reflections. For most users, a single UV protective filter is the practical choice — add a polariser or ND separately only when you actually need the effect.
