Question 1

What is the difference between the Hasselblad 50mm C, CF, and CFi versions?

Accepted Answer

The C version is the oldest, with a simpler shutter mechanism and no databus contacts. The CF version introduced compatibility with both focal-plane shutter bodies and leaf-shutter use, and added improved coatings. The CFi (and CFE) versions are the most refined, featuring the T* multi-coating, improved close-focus performance, and in the case of the CFE, electronic contacts for use with the 200-series bodies. All versions share the same Distagon optical formula but differ in build, ergonomics, and compatibility.

Question 2

Is the Hasselblad Carl Zeiss Distagon 50mm f/2.8 compatible with the Hasselblad 907X or X-system bodies?

Accepted Answer

No — the Distagon 50mm f/2.8 is a Hasselblad V-mount lens and is not directly compatible with the Hasselblad X-system (XCD mount) or the 907X CFV II body without an adapter. Hasselblad does not make an official V-to-X adapter, though third-party options exist. For native X-system shooting, lenses like the XCD 45mm or XCD 55mm are the intended alternatives.

Question 3

Does the Distagon 50mm f/2.8 require mirror lock-up on a Hasselblad 500 series body?

Accepted Answer

No. The 50mm Distagon is a retrofocus (reverse-telephoto) design, which means the rear element sits far enough back to clear the mirror during normal operation. You can shoot handheld without engaging mirror lock-up, unlike some extreme wide-angle lenses such as the older 40mm Super-Angulon that do require mirror lock-up.

Question 4

How does the Hasselblad Distagon 50mm f/2.8 compare to the Hasselblad 60mm f/3.5?

Accepted Answer

The Distagon 50mm f/2.8 gives a wider field of view and a one-stop faster aperture than the 60mm f/3.5, making it the better choice for low-light work and a more pronounced wide-angle perspective. The 60mm f/3.5 is often preferred for its more compact size and slightly more natural field of view on medium format. Both are sharp Zeiss designs, but the 50mm is noticeably heavier and larger.

Question 5

What is the Carl Zeiss T* coating, and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

T* is Carl Zeiss's proprietary multi-layer anti-reflection coating applied to lens elements. It significantly reduces internal reflections, flare, and ghosting, while improving contrast and color fidelity — particularly noticeable when shooting toward light sources or in high-contrast scenes. On medium format, where files carry a lot of detail, this coating helps ensure the optical performance matches the resolving power of the format.

Question 6

Is buying a used Hasselblad Zeiss Distagon 50mm f/2.8 a good idea?

Accepted Answer

Hasselblad V-system lenses are built to last decades and are fully manual, meaning there are very few electronically fragile components to worry about. The main things to check on a pre-owned example are the condition of the leaf shutter blades (look for oil contamination) and the aperture diaphragm, the smoothness of the focus helicoid, and the state of the T* coating on the front and rear elements. Every used lens on Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and individually photographed, with a minimum 12 months warranty.
