Question 1

What does the Hasselblad Extension Tube H 13mm actually do?

Accepted Answer

An extension tube is a hollow spacer that fits between your lens and camera body. By moving the lens farther away from the sensor, it forces the optical path to focus at a shorter distance than the lens can on its own, allowing you to photograph subjects much closer than normal. The H 13mm version is sized specifically for the Hasselblad H-mount and keeps the electronic contacts intact so autofocus and metering continue to work.

Question 2

Which lenses work with the Hasselblad H 13mm Extension Tube?

Accepted Answer

The tube is designed for Hasselblad HC and HCD lenses used on H-series camera bodies. Short-to-medium focal lengths benefit most — lenses like the HC 80mm and HC 120mm Macro see a significant increase in maximum magnification. Telephoto lenses gain comparatively less magnification per millimetre of extension, so the 13mm tube is best suited to standard and macro focal lengths.

Question 3

Can I stack two Hasselblad extension tubes together?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Hasselblad H extension tubes are designed to be combined. Pairing the H 13mm with the Hasselblad Extension Tube H 26mm, for example, gives you 39mm of total extension and a substantially closer minimum focus distance. Studio photographers doing detailed art reproduction or miniature work often use two tubes together to reach near the minimum focus distance of their chosen lens.

Question 4

What are the disadvantages of using an extension tube?

Accepted Answer

The main trade-off is that adding an extension tube means you can no longer focus at infinity — the tube is purely a close-focus tool. You also lose some light transmission as the lens is moved farther from the sensor, which can slow down autofocus slightly. Telephoto lenses see only a minimal magnification gain relative to the extension added. None of these are deal-breakers for dedicated close-up work, but they make extension tubes unsuitable for general shooting.

Question 5

Is buying a used Hasselblad extension tube a good idea?

Accepted Answer

Extension tubes contain no optical glass and no moving mechanical parts beyond the bayonet mounts, which means they age very well and are low-risk to buy second-hand. Check the mount contacts and bayonet for signs of wear or damage before purchase. At Camera-tweedehands.nl, every used extension tube is individually photographed and professionally inspected before listing, and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty and 14 days right of return.
