Question 1

What does a UV filter actually do on a digital camera?

Accepted Answer

On digital sensors, UV filters have little optical effect on the image itself. Their main job is physical: they act as a clear protective cover for the front element of your lens, guarding against dust, fingerprints, light splashes and scratches. Think of it as cheap insurance for an expensive piece of glass.

Question 2

Does the Hoya HD UV filter fit my lens?

Accepted Answer

This filter has a 77mm thread. Check the front of your lens barrel or lens cap — the thread size is usually printed there preceded by a ø symbol. Common 77mm lenses include fast telephoto zooms and many full-frame standard zooms. If your lens is a different size (e.g. 67mm or 82mm), you'll need a different variant.

Question 3

Will the Hoya HD UV filter affect image quality or cause vignetting?

Accepted Answer

The HD line uses high-transmittance glass with multi-coating, which minimises reflections and light loss. On a 77mm filter paired with a typical full-frame or APS-C lens, vignetting is not expected under normal shooting conditions. Very wide-angle lenses can sometimes show corner darkening with any filter, so check your specific lens specs if that's a concern.

Question 4

Is buying a used UV filter worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes — UV filters are passive glass elements with no electronics or moving parts, so there's very little that can go wrong beyond surface scratches. A used Hoya HD UV filter that passes inspection is functionally identical to a new one. Just verify the glass is clean and the thread is undamaged before fitting it to your lens.

Question 5

Can I stack this filter with a polariser or ND filter?

Accepted Answer

Technically yes, but stacking filters can introduce vignetting, extra flare and slight contrast loss — especially on wide-angle lenses. In practice, most photographers remove the UV filter when adding a polariser or ND, then put it back for everyday use. The slim profile of the HD series helps reduce vignetting risk when stacking is unavoidable.

Question 6

What warranty comes with a second-hand Hoya filter from Camera-tweedehands.nl?

Accepted Answer

Every pre-owned filter sold on Camera-tweedehands.nl comes with a minimum 12 months warranty. The exact period is shown on the individual variant listing. Each item is individually inspected and photographed before sale.
