Question 1

What does a variable ND filter actually do?

Accepted Answer

A variable ND filter lets you rotate the outer ring to reduce the amount of light reaching your sensor — no need to carry a stack of fixed ND filters. It's useful for controlling motion blur in bright conditions or shooting video with a wide aperture in daylight.

Question 2

What lens size does the Hoya Variable Density II 82mm fit?

Accepted Answer

It fits any lens with an 82mm filter thread. This is a common thread size found on many wide-angle and standard zoom lenses from Canon, Nikon, Sony and others.

Question 3

Can I use a step-up ring to fit this filter on a smaller lens?

Accepted Answer

Yes — a step-up ring lets you use the 82mm Hoya Variable Density II on lenses with smaller filter threads, like 77mm or 67mm. It's a cost-effective way to use one filter across multiple lenses.

Question 4

Is buying a used Hoya Variable Density II worth it?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely, as long as the glass is clean and free of scratches or coating damage. Used ND filters are a smart buy since they have no moving electronic parts to wear out. Every item on Camera-tweedehands.nl comes with a minimum 12 months warranty and is individually photographed so you know exactly what you're getting.

Question 5

Does a variable ND filter affect image quality?

Accepted Answer

All variable ND filters can introduce a slight color cast or cross-pattern vignetting at extreme settings — this is a known trade-off of the polarizer-based design. Using the filter within its recommended rotation range keeps image quality clean. Hoya is a well-regarded filter brand known for quality optical coatings.

Question 6

What's the difference between a variable ND and a fixed ND filter?

Accepted Answer

A fixed ND has one set light-reduction value (like ND8 or ND64), while a variable ND lets you adjust the strength by rotating the ring. Variable NDs are more versatile for run-and-gun shooting; fixed NDs are simpler and typically introduce fewer optical artifacts.
