Question 1

Is the Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-T 11-23mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH any good?

Accepted Answer

Yes — it's consistently praised for sharpness and build quality relative to its compact size. Four aspherical surfaces do real work controlling distortion and chromatic aberration at the wide end, which is typically where ultra-wide zooms struggle most. The 14-element, 11-group construction is notably complex for a lens this small, and real-world results on APS-C bodies show clean, detailed edges across the frame. It won't match an f/2.8 zoom in low light, but optically it punches well above its weight for a zoom in this category.

Question 2

Does Leica make good lenses?

Accepted Answer

Leica has one of the longest-running reputations for optical precision in the industry. Their design philosophy prioritises sharpness, contrast, and compact form — traits that carry through to the T-series zoom lineup as well. The Super-Vario-Elmar-T is a good example: it's not a fast lens, but the glass quality and build consistency reflect the brand's standards. Worth noting that Leica offers lenses across different tiers — Summicron, Summilux, Elmarit, and the Vario (zoom) range — each with different aperture and price points, so there's a range of options within the ecosystem.

Question 3

What cameras is the Leica 11-23mm f/3.5-4.5 compatible with?

Accepted Answer

It's designed for Leica's TL-mount cameras and is also compatible with Leica SL bodies via the shared L-mount system. On an APS-C body like the Leica TL2, it gives a 17–35mm equivalent field of view. On a full-frame SL body, it will only cover the APS-C sensor area unless you crop. It does not fit Leica M-mount bodies without an adapter, and even then, autofocus functionality would be lost.

Question 4

What is the 35mm equivalent of the 11-23mm focal range on APS-C?

Accepted Answer

On an APS-C sensor (Leica TL series), the 11–23mm range translates to approximately 17–35mm in full-frame terms. The 17mm end is genuinely wide — useful for architecture interiors and vast landscapes — while 35mm equivalent is a versatile moderate wide angle for street and travel shooting.

Question 5

How does the Leica 11-23mm compare to the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN?

Accepted Answer

The Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN offers a wider maximum aperture (f/2.8 vs f/3.5 at the wide end), which gives it a tangible low-light and depth-of-field advantage — roughly one stop more light. The Sigma also starts slightly wider at 10mm. The Leica, on the other hand, brings the build quality and optical character associated with the brand, and extends to 23mm, giving you more reach on the long end. If astrophotography or indoor low-light shooting is a priority, the Sigma's brighter aperture is meaningful. For general landscape and travel use, either performs well, and the used price difference is often the deciding factor.

Question 6

Is the Leica 11-23mm f/3.5-4.5 good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

It can work for astrophotography, with some caveats. The 11mm end gives you a wide field of view for capturing Milky Way arcs or constellation framing, and the aspherical construction helps keep stars looking sharp toward the edges. However, f/3.5 is on the slower side for astro work — you'll need to push ISO higher or use longer exposures compared to an f/2 or f/2.8 lens. For dark-sky locations with a capable high-ISO body, it's usable; for more demanding or light-polluted conditions, a faster prime would be preferable.

Question 7

Does the Leica 11-23mm f/3.5-4.5 include a lens hood?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this lens ships with a lens hood included — you don't need to source one separately. For an ultra-wide lens, having a hood is particularly useful when shooting landscapes with the sun at a steep angle, as it helps prevent the flare and contrast loss that wide-angle glass is prone to in those conditions.

Question 8

Is buying a used Leica 11-23mm f/3.5-4.5 Super-Vario-Elmar-T ASPH worth it?

Accepted Answer

For most buyers, yes. Leica glass holds up well over time — the build quality means second-hand copies are often in excellent functional condition. The main things to check on a used copy are the front element coating (ultra-wide lenses can show more wear there) and zoom ring smoothness. On Camera-tweedehands.nl, every lens is professionally inspected and individually photographed before listing, and all used lenses come with a minimum 12 months warranty. That makes buying a pre-owned copy considerably lower risk than private marketplace purchases.
