Question 1

What does 'E46' mean on a Leica UVa filter?

Accepted Answer

'E46' is Leica's designation for a 46mm filter thread diameter. Any Leica lens with an E46 marking on the barrel or cap accepts this filter size.

Question 2

What is a UVa filter actually used for?

Accepted Answer

A UVa filter absorbs ultraviolet light, which can cause a slight hazy or bluish cast in outdoor and landscape shots — especially at altitude or near water. Beyond optical benefits, it also acts as a permanent front-element protector against dust, moisture and accidental contact.

Question 3

Does using a UV filter affect image quality on a Leica lens?

Accepted Answer

A high-quality UV filter like this one adds minimal glass elements in the optical path, so any effect on sharpness or contrast is negligible in normal shooting conditions. Budget filters from unknown brands are a different story — using a Leica-branded filter with Leica glass keeps the optical chain consistent.

Question 4

Is buying a used Leica E46 UVa filter worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes — filters are among the safest second-hand accessories to buy. They have no moving parts, no electronics and no firmware. A pre-owned Leica UVa filter in good condition performs identically to a new one, as long as the glass is clean and free of deep scratches. Every used filter on Camera-tweedehands.nl is individually inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty.

Question 5

Can I use this filter on non-Leica lenses with a 46mm thread?

Accepted Answer

Filter threads are standardised, so the Leica E46 UVa filter physically fits any lens with a 46mm thread regardless of brand. That said, it's sized and positioned to work best with Leica's own 46mm lenses and their lens hoods.
