Question 1

How do you inspect used lenses?

Accepted Answer

Every lens goes through a 15-point check carried out by our specialists. We check things like the operation of autofocus, the focus ring and zoom ring (where applicable); image stabilisation (where present); aperture operation; the front and rear element for scratches and coating damage; the lens interior for fungus and dust; the mount and electronic contact points; and the overall cosmetic condition. Every lens gets a condition grade and comes with a minimum of 12 months' warranty.

Question 2

What's the difference between Canon EF and Canon EF-S lenses?

Accepted Answer

Canon EF lenses are designed for both full-frame and APS-C DSLR cameras. Canon EF-S lenses are intended exclusively for APS-C bodies (crop-sensor). On a full-frame body, EF-S lenses either won't physically fit or will cause vignetting. So make sure you know your camera type before buying a used Canon lens.

Question 3

Can I use a used Nikon F lens on a newer Nikon Z mirrorless camera?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with the official Nikon FTZ adapter, most Nikon AF-S F-mount lenses work fully on Nikon Z cameras, including autofocus and image stabilisation. That makes used Nikon F lenses like the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 E ED VR interesting for Z users too.

Question 4

Are used Sigma Art lenses a good alternative to native brand lenses?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Sigma Art series — such as the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art and the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art — is known for sharp optics and solid build quality. Used, they're often considerably cheaper than comparable Canon or Nikon primes, while image quality stays on the same level.

Question 5

How do I choose between an f/2.8 and an f/4 zoom lens?

Accepted Answer

An f/2.8 lets in more light, which is handy in low-light conditions and gives you more background blur. An f/4 version is generally lighter, smaller and cheaper — even second-hand. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM is a popular choice for those who value mobility, while the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM is preferred for sports and event photography.

Question 6

What do VR, IS or OS mean on used DSLR lenses?

Accepted Answer

These are brand-specific names for optical image stabilisation: VR (Vibration Reduction) for Nikon, IS (Image Stabilization) for Canon and OS (Optical Stabilization) for Sigma. Image stabilisation helps when shooting with longer shutter speeds without a tripod. On DSLR cameras, stabilisation is usually built into the lens rather than the body — so it's a relevant factor when buying second-hand.

Question 7

What mount should I check for when buying used DSLR glass?

Accepted Answer

The mount needs to match your camera's mount. On Camera-tweedehands.nl you can filter by Canon fit, Nikon fit, Pentax K fit and Sony A fit. Also check whether you have a full-frame or APS-C body, since some lenses — like EF-S for Canon or DX for Nikon — are intended exclusively for crop-sensor cameras.

Question 8

Which used DSLR lenses are most in demand?

Accepted Answer

Among the most sought-after used DSLR lenses are the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM. Among third-party glass, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art is especially popular, particularly for Canon EF and Nikon F mount.
