Building the system

With one holder and an adapter ring per lens you swap filters in seconds. The Big and Little Stopper (10 and 6 stops) are the classics for long exposures, and the graduated ND filters in soft and hard tame bright skies — something you never fully recover in software afterwards.

Buying used when filters matter

Graduated filters and Stoppers are pricey and fragile; buying used pays off, provided they are strictly inspected. Every surface goes under bright light with us — scratches in the image area mean rejection — and holders and rings are tested for clamping force. A complete system to spare? We also buy sets in their entirety.

Buying used LEE Filters: Stoppers, grads and holders

LEE Filters from Andover, England, has made filters for film, theatre and photography since 1967 and set the standard for daylight long exposures with the Big Stopper (10 stops). The 100mm system is the most widespread: a holder with adapter rings per lens diameter into which you slide resin filters (graduated ND in hard and soft) and glass filters (ProGlass IRND, Stoppers). The Seven5 is the little brother for mirrorless cameras, the SW150 fits lenses with a bulbous front element such as the Nikon 14-24mm.

Resin filters scratch more easily than glass. We check every filter against the light for scratches and wear, look for colour cast (older Stoppers are slightly blue, which we note) and on holders test the spring clips, the filter slots and the included adapter rings. Damaged filters are not something we sell.
