Buying used RED: Komodo, V-Raptor or DSMC2?
RED Digital Cinema from California released the first affordable 4K cinema camera, the RED ONE, in 2007 and started the digital film revolution. The DSMC2 generation (Gemini 5K, Helium 8K, Monstro 8K VV) is modular: you choose body, module and battery plate yourself. The Komodo 6K from 2020 is a one-kilo cube with Canon RF mount and global shutter, the Komodo-X adds speed and a tilting screen, and the V-Raptor 8K VV and V-Raptor X are the current flagships. Since 2024 RED belongs to Nikon. All cameras record in REDCODE RAW, which can be pushed almost endlessly in post.
On used RED cameras we read the operating hours, test the sensor for dead pixels and artefacts at several ISOs, check every port (SDI, USB-C, EXT), the fans, the mounts (RF or PL) and recording to CFast or CFexpress. Firmware is updated to the latest version. Batteries and modules are graded separately.
A Komodo with an RF-to-PL adapter and a V-Mount battery plate is a complete start; larger productions look at a V-Raptor with a DSMC3 monitor. We help plan a kit and buy your current cinema camera.
